class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ashley Hurlock<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The CES is pleased to announce that Chapman University student Ashley Hurlock,\u00a0Master of Arts in Teaching: Secondary Science (Biology) Emphasis\u00a0Program, has\u00a0been chosen as\u00a0winner of\u00a0a $5,000 AFCEA Educational Foundation STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) Teaching Scholarship award for 2011.\u00a0 This is the second consecutive year that students from Chapman&#8217;s secondary science\/math teacher preparation program have been chosen for this honor.<\/p>\n<p>The AFCEA\u00a0(Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association) Educational Foundation is a registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization\u00a0whose mission is to support development of engineers and technical personnel through selective motivational awards, prizes and scholarships, grants for educational activities of unique and high value, and professional educational programs.<\/p>\n<p>The AFCEA Educational Foundation&#8217;s STEM Teacher Scholarship Awards is an annual competition that\u00a0provides $5,000 scholarships to\u00a0each of approximately\u00a050 U.S. students actively pursuing an undergraduate degree, graduate degree or credential\/licensure for the purpose of teaching STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics) subjects at a U.S. middle or secondary school.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the STEM Teacher Scholarship, each graduating recipient, upon assuming a STEM teaching position in a U.S. middle or secondary school, is eligible to receive a $1,000 AFCEA Science Teaching Tools grant per year for three years, on the condition he\/she remains teaching a STEM subject.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.afcea.org\/education\/scholarships\/STEMTeachers.asp\">Click here<\/a> for more information on this program.<\/p>\n<p>Chapman University is the only California institution of higher education to have one of its masters degree students recognized\u00a0for this distinction.\u00a0 We are very pleased to have\u00a0the qualifications of Ms. Hurlock, who\u00a0will be completing
