Professor <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2013\/03\/11\/peter-mclaren-joins-chapman-university-as-distinguished-fellow-in-critical-studies\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Peter McLaren<\/a>, who is Professor in the Division of Urban Schooling, at UCLA and <i>Distinguished Fellow in Critical Studies<\/i><br \/>\nat Chapman University gifted over a hundred political posters, t-shirts, and artifacts. Part of his collection \u201cRevolutionary Art from South America\u201d is currently exhibited at the Chapman University Library until January 2014.\u00a0 Dr. McLaren has authored and edited over 50 books including five that have won the critics\u2019 choice award by the American Education Studies Association. \u00a0His book <i>Life in Schools <\/i>is now in its 5<sup>th <\/sup>edition. Through an affiliation with<a title=\"Dr. Shirley Steinberg\" href=\"http:\/\/educ.ucalgary.ca\/profiles\/shirley-steinberg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Shirley Steinberg<\/a>, Professor at the University of Calgary, another gift was made to the Chapman University Paulo Freire Archival Collection by <a title=\"Dr. Henry Giroux\" href=\"http:\/\/www.henryagiroux.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Henry Giroux<\/a> with documents and papers on critical pedagogy as well as his correspondences about his controversy at Boston University. Dr. Giroux, an American cultural critic and one of the founding theorists of critical pedagogy in the United States is best known for his pioneering work in critical pedagogy, neoliberalism, and youth studies.<\/p>\n<p>The Freire Archival Collection is dedicated to the scholarship of Paulo Freire and Critical Pedagogy and is overseen by Dr. <a title=\"Dr. Suzanne SooHoo\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/suzanne-soohoo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Suzanne SooHoo<\/a>, co-director of the <a title=\"Paulo Freire Democratic Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/ces\/research\/hassinger-endowed-chair\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paulo Freire Democratic Project<\/a> and Hassinger Endowed Chair of Culture, Community and Collaboration, and <a title=\"Dr. Thomas C. Wilson\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/thomas-wilson\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dr. Tom Wilson<\/a>, co-director, who was awarded a lifetime achievement award from the Paulo Freire AERA SIG, the Freire Project.Org. and the International Institute for Critical Pedagogy and Transformative Leadership.\u00a0 Dr. Wilson has presented at over 100 academic conferences.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">His recent work is a co-edited volume,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/8678663-memories-of-paulo?from_search=true\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Memories of Paulo,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0with Dr.\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/anaida-colon-muniz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anaida Colon-Muniz<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0Professor Wilson has applied his understanding of pedagogy and social justice by reaching out locally and internationally on topics such as democratic education, organizational behavior, educational ethics, moral education, critical pedagogy, and social justice.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Freire was a Brazilian educator and philosopher who was a leading advocate of critical pedagogy. He is best known for his influential work, <a title=\"Pedagogy of the Oppressed\" href=\"http:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/72657.Pedagogy_of_the_Oppressed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Pedagogy of the Oppressed<\/i><\/a>, which is considered one of the foundational texts of the critical pedagogy movement.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On
