{"id":2275,"date":"2014-01-27T16:34:03","date_gmt":"2014-01-28T00:34:03","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2014\/01\/27\/padres-unidos-chapman-university-college-of-educational-studies-a-partnership-that-moves-mountains\/"},"modified":"2014-01-27T16:34:03","modified_gmt":"2014-01-28T00:34:03","slug":"padres-unidos-chapman-university-college-of-educational-studies-a-partnership-that-moves-mountains","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2014\/01\/27\/padres-unidos-chapman-university-college-of-educational-studies-a-partnership-that-moves-mountains\/","title":{"rendered":"Padres Unidos \u2013Chapman University College of Educational Studies:  A Partnership That Moves Mountains!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Four years ago, an astute elementary school principal from Santa Ana, CA, Judy Magsaysay had the vision and wisdom to bring <a title=\"College of Educational Studies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/ces\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chapman and the College of Educational Studies<\/a> (CES) and Padres Unidos (PU) together.\u00a0 Her action stemmed from her understanding the importance the CES faculty had placed on the work and philosophy of Paulo Freire, especially the notion of partnerships with communities. In 2011, Chapman\u2019s College of Educational Studies and the Office of Extended Education provided training to Padres Unidos volunteers through a Community Workers Award program. The program included comprehensive modules dealing with education, health, faith, and parenting.<\/p>\n<p>On January 22, Padres Unidos hosted the Orange County Padres Unidos Partner Appreciation Event and awarded for the first time \u201cPartner of the Year\u201d to Donald N. Cardinal, Ph.D., the dean of Chapman\u2019s College of Educational Studies. As Suzanne SooHoo, Ph.D., Hassinger Chair and Co-Director of the <a title=\"Paulo Freire Democratic Project\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/ces\/research\/democratic-project.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paulo Freire Democratic Project<\/a>, introduced Dean Cardinal, she indicated that he \u201cis the captain of our ship and he recognizes that that all of us did not come to America on the same ship, but we\u2019re now all in the same boat and that partnership is not just a relationship, but a living idea.\u00a0 It is a living idea about a shared community.\u00a0 An idea that Don Cardinal champions each and every day to all of us \u2013 Everybody matters \u2013 all races, cultures, languages, religions, abilities, and orientations is a society where all people are treated with dignity and respect. \u00a0For him, this means that as educators we must work within a community to improve the quality of life for the community and its people.\u00a0 He considers this an honor and a duty to contribute to the well-being of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While accepting his award, Dean Cardinal spoke these words, \u201cWe can all make a big difference by making a small difference each day.\u00a0 Today, thank you for honoring me with this celebration, but we truly are celebrating the difference WE make in the community<b>.\u201d<\/b><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Padres Unidos hosted the Orange County Padres Unidos Partner Appreciation Event and awarded for the first time \u201cPartner of the Year\u201d to Donald N.
