For this reason, attending seminars and workshops with others can be an opportunity to refocus and engage with others who are excited about the content they are teaching.\u00a0 In some ways these events bring us back to our center and remind us why we chose this profession.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2339\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2339\" style=\"width: 198px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/Rafe-Esquith-BW.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2339\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2339 \" alt=\"Rafe Esquith\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/Rafe-Esquith-BW.jpg\" width=\"198\" height=\"288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/Rafe-Esquith-BW.jpg 330w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/Rafe-Esquith-BW-206x300.jpg 206w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 198px) 100vw, 198px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2339\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rafe Esquith, teacher and author of &#8220;Real Talk for Real Teachers.&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>These activities are also opportunities to reframe the prevailing view of \u201cThose who can, do. Those who can\u2019t, teach.\u201d\u00a0 (some silly expression like that) As educators we must articulate the art and science of teaching.\u00a0 Good teaching takes work and commitment, and our involvement with scholarly endeavors is one way to demonstrate our commitment. What we learn impacts our students; it improves our practice.<\/p>\n<p>Recently, Chapman Libreria Martinez events have provided great opportunities for professional development.\u00a0 With Luis Ruan, the topic of fatherhood and youth gangs was recently the focus, and soon (March 1, 2014) Rafe Esquith <a title=\"Rafe Esquith book signing event: Saturday March 1, 2014\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/ces\/_files\/libreria-martinez\/Esquith.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Libreria Event Rafe Esquith <\/a>will offer advice for teachers across the spectrum, from beginning to veteran.\u00a0 In addition to these professional development opportunities, I am shouting from the rooftops about the upcoming (March 7, 2014) opportunity to learn from <a title=\"National experts on evolution and climate change to present Feb. 7 panel\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/happenings\/2014\/01\/08\/national-experts-on-evolution-and-climate-change-to-present-feb-7-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\">national experts on evolution and climate change<\/a>. <a title=\"Bill Nye, &quot;The Science Guy,&quot; website\" href=\"http:\/\/www.billnye.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Nye (<i>the science guy!<\/i>) <\/a>will host this open-panel discussion, which features our very own <a title=\"Dr. Brian Alters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/brian-alters\" target=\"_blank\">Brian Alters, Ph.D<\/a>., Director of Evolution and Education Research Center and President of the National Center for Science Education (NCSE).<\/p>\n<p><strong>The forum will take place at Chapman University\u2019s Argyros Forum Room 202, at 4 p.m. A reception will follow from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in Argyros Forum 209AB.\u00a0 It is free and open to the public.
