{"id":2345,"date":"2014-02-11T13:57:25","date_gmt":"2014-02-11T21:57:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2014\/02\/11\/sharing-stories-and-tamales\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T06:36:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T06:36:42","slug":"sharing-stories-and-tamales","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2014\/02\/11\/sharing-stories-and-tamales\/","title":{"rendered":"Sharing Stories and Tamales"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently visited the Chapman website and saw the new caption promoting Chapman as one family with many stories.\u00a0 I found it uncanny how this coincides with my recent involvement in planning a district-wide event for all Santa Ana Unified school district families.\u00a0 It was an affair where over 300 people came to share their stories- stories featuring their traditions, family treasures,<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2344\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2344\" style=\"width: 365px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/rene.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-2344\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-2344  \" alt=\"Rene and his siblings, Breana and Anthony\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/rene.jpg\" width=\"365\" height=\"257\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/rene.jpg 650w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2014\/02\/rene-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2344\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rene and his siblings, Breana and Anthony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>and recipes.\u00a0 They were happy to engage in table conversations related to the family winter project sent home over winter vacation.\u00a0 The project outlined conversation starters that promoted family dialogue and collaboration.<\/p>\n<p>It was heartwarming to see children sharing stories about traditions and cherished artifacts.\u00a0 One child, Rene Olivares, shared this:<\/p>\n<p>One of our family traditions is to make tamales on Christmas Eve.\u00a0 The recipe originated from my great grandma but I&#8217;m pretty sure if came from my great, great, great grandma.\u00a0 My grandma is the one that makes the tamales but we all help out.<\/p>\n<p>All my family gathers at my grandma&#8217;s house the morning of Christmas Eve to help her make tamales.\u00a0 We all help, whether it&#8217;s to prepare the dough, soak the corn husks in water, or put the meat in the tamales.\u00a0 We make 3-4 different kinds: \u00a0beef with red chile, chicken with green chile, strawberry and pineapple.\u00a0 My favorites are the chicken with green chile.<\/p>\n<p>My grandma says this is one of the recipes she treasures because she learned it from her mom.\u00a0 We don&#8217;t feel it&#8217;s Christmas if we don&#8217;t have tamales.<\/p>\n<p>The best thing about this tradition is that all our family gets together and participates in keeping alive this tradition.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I recently visited the Chapman website and saw the new caption promoting Chapman as one family with many stories.
