Scott, Ph.D<\/a><br \/>\n., a champion for defending the integrity of science &#x2013; particularly involving the teaching of evolution and climate change within in the class &#8212; has been honored by<br \/>\n<a title=\"Minor Planet Circulars description of Asteroid Eugeniescott\" href=\"http:\/\/www.minorplanetcenter.net\/iau\/ECS\/MPCArchive\/2014\/MPC_20140712.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">International Astronomical Union&#8217;s Minor Planet Center<\/a><br \/>\n by having Asteroid 249530 named after her.&#xA0;<br \/>\n<a title=\"Space Rocks for Two Science Promoters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.slate.com\/blogs\/bad_astronomy\/2014\/07\/25\/asteroids_two_space_rocks_named_for_science_communicators.html\" target=\"_blank\">Asteroid Eugeniescott<\/a><br \/>\n orbits the Sun in the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter every 5.3 years. It is about 2.9 kilometers across, and its surface is covered with a dark material suggesting that it was formed in the cooler, outer parts of our solar system.&#xD;<br \/>\n&#xD;<br \/>\nDr. Eugenie Scott, a former university professor, served as the executive director of National Center for Science Education( NCSE) from 1987 to 2014.&#xA0; (College of Educational Studies faculty member<br \/>\n<a title=\"Dr. Brian Alters\" href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/brian-alters\" target=\"_blank\">Dr. Brian Alters<\/a><br \/>\n is President of NCSE.) &#xA0;Dr. Scott now serves as the chair of NCSE&#8217;s Advisory Council and as a CES faculty associate.
