Community: Reading ‘Las Comadres’ Club meets in Redlands and Santa Ana<\/strong>

\n“Finished reading the book?” That was the first question that Julia asked four other Comadres (book club members).
\n
\nJulia Amante, Alejandra, Emily, Lilian de La Torre-Reed and Terry Saucedo – gathered at the start of the meeting Friday, at dusk, in the bookstore Barnes & Noble of Redlands. Amante of the Inland Empire, has been the Coordinator of reading Las Comadres Club in this area for the past five years and said that they gathered in public places, such as libraries, cafes and bookshops, to give more visibility to the authors of Hispanic Heritage. The Comadres and Friends National Latino Book Club belongs to the organization Las Comadres for Las Americas in Austin, Texas, dedicated to Latinas in order to establish connections with other women. The first reading of Las Comadres was formed in New York in 2004. They are now in 16 cities and in eight States – Arizona, California, Colorado, District of Columbia, Florida, Maryland, New York and Texas – and there are more than 30,000 members in the country. California has four locations where there is this reading club: Redlands,
\nSanta Ana, <\/strong>
\nLong Beach and Vista.

\n Yvonne and Allyssa Flores, Coordinators of Las Comadres<\/figcaption><\/figure> <\/p>\n

Yvonne Flores, owner of the Gallery 211 in the Artist District of Santa Ana, and daughter, Allyssa Flores, 26 years old are the coordinators of the Las Comadres Reading Club in Orange County. “It was a year ago that my daughter and I decided to launch the book club here”, said Flores. “I am second generation and my daughter is third and we felt we were losing our roots.” <\/strong><\/p>\n


\nDuring the gathering in Redlands, readers talked about the protagonist of the novel “Ana of California” (Penguin Press, 2015) by Andi Terán. The protagonist, Ana Cortez, is a teenager from East Los Angeles who becomes an orphan upon the death of her parents and winds up going to an educational program on a farm in the northern part of the State, which is a great change in her life. “The truth is that it gave me grief when she was beaten up in one of the foster homes,” said De la Torre-Reed. Saucedo was glad to see her unusual last name in the novel.” Ana is a girl who has a very sophisticated vocabulary”, she said. Amante, curious about the two teenagers in the story, Alejandra and Emily – had not read the novel yet because she wanted to know more about plot to see if she would be interested or not – She said that the novel “read very well” and thought that “she would like it”.

\nAlejandra, the 16 years daughter of De la Torre-Reed, has always been intrigued by the Reading Club because she has been able to learn about new Latino authors. “Since I was little, I’ve been an insatiable reader,” she said, adding that someday she would like to be a writer but seemed it more practical do a master’s degree. “Something I’ve learned is that there are Mexican authors- people like me, or people of color, which I did not know about. “I’ve noticed that we also have stories worthy of telling”. Amante’s 14 year old daughter, Emily, said that there was sufficient interest in reading among her classmates. “I tell them that literature is important but they are still stuck on the idea that they want to be doctors and only want to study science. It is a great shame, “she said. The group has gathered in the Redlands Bookstore for the last seven years discussing books written by Latino authors and they would like more people to be interested in their book club. <\/p>\n

Flores also said the same thing, adding that they have an average of five people who come to discuss books every month at Libreria Martinez de Chapman University in Santa Ana. “I think that reading is important because this habit of being avid readers is not instilled in us as Latinas,” said Flores. “Our grandmothers gathered to talk while they were weaving. But new generations<\/strong> gather in the book club”. To be member of the Las Comadres Book Club costs nothing and the gatherings are open to the public. <\/strong><\/p>\n

The list of the monthly assigned books are published on the Las Comadres website lascomadres.com\/latinolit . One book is highlighted per each month of the year: 10 books written by Latinas, one by a Latino and one youth book. Most of the works can be found in Spanish even though the literary conversations are usually in English. In 2015 free teleconferences are offered with the authors, such as Chiquis Rivera, Eileen Truax and Cristina Saralgui.<\/p>\n


\nLas Redlands members went from one topic to another, including conversations about their husbands and their work- so the two hours went quickly. Saucedo commented, “If we don’t highlight our culture, who will?

\nThe upcoming book titles for the book club are: Punto de equilibrio (Point of Balance, 368 pages) by J.G. Jurado in October; Gods of Tango (384 pages) by Carolina De Roberts In November; and Stepdog (256 pages) by Mireya Navarro in December.

\n“¿Acabaron de leer el libro?”
\n
\nÉsa fue la primera pregunta que les hizo Julia Amante, a las otras cuatro comadres – Alejandra, Emily, Lilian De La Torre-Reed y Terry Saucedo – reunidas al comenzar la tertulia un viernes, al atardecer, en la librería Barnes & Noble de Redlands. Amante, de Highland, ha sido la coordinadora del Club de Lectura Las Comadres en el Inland por los últimos cinco años y dijo que se reunían en lugares públicos, como bibliotecas, cafés y librerías, para dar más visibilidad a los autores de herencia hispana.

\nLas Comadres and Friends National Latino Book Club pertenece a la organización Las Comadres Para Las Américas de Austin, Texas, dedicada a que las latinas establezcan conexiones con otras mujeres. El primer Club de Lectura Las Comadres se formó en Nueva York en el 2004. Ahora se encuentran en 16 ciudades de ocho estados – Arizona, California, Colorado, Distrito de Columbia, Florida, Maryland, Nueva York y Texas – y hay más de 30,000 miembros en el país. California cuenta con cuatro lugares en donde hay este club de lectura: Redlands, Santa Ana, Long Beach y Vista.

\nYvonne Flores, dueña de la Gallery 211 en la colonia artística de Santa Ana, y su hija, Allyssa Flores, de 26 años, son las coordinadoras del Club de Lectura Las Comadres en el condado de Orange. “Hace un año que mi hija y yo nos encargamos de lanzar el club de lectura aquí”, dijo Flores. “Yo soy segunda generación y mi hija es tercera y sentí que ella estaba perdiendo sus raíces”.

\nDurante la tertulia de Redlands, las lectoras hablaron acerca de la protagonista de la novela “Ana of California” (Penguin Press, 2015) por Andi Terán. \nquienes no habían leído la novela todavía porque querían saber más de la trama para ver si les iba a interesar o no – dijo que la novela “se leía muy bien” y que “les iba a gustar”. Por su parte, Alejandra, de 16 años e hija de De La Torre-Reed, siempre le había hecho ilusión el Club de Lectura Las Comadres porque ha podido conocer a nuevos autores de origen hispano.
\n
\n“Desde que era pequeña, he sido una lectora insaciable”, afirmó la joven, añadiendo que algún día quisiera ser escritora aunque la parecía más practico hacerse maestra. “Algo que he aprendido es que existen autores como yo, mexicanos o gente de color, lo cual no sabía antes. Me he dado cuenta que nosotros también tenemos historias dignas de contar”.

\nA juicio de Emily, de 14 años e hija de Amante, no había suficiente interés en la lectura entre sus compañeros de la escuela. “Yo les digo que la literatura es importante pero ellos siguen aferrados que quieren ser doctores y solamente quieren estudiar las ciencias. Es una gran pena”, comentó.

\nLas tertulianas reunidas en la librería de Redlands ya llevan siete años tertuliando sobre los libros escritos por autores latinos y quisieran que más gente se interesara en su club de lectura. Flores también opinó lo mismo, añadiendo que un promedio de cinco personas que tertuliaban, o conversaban, sobre los libros cada mes en la Librería Martínez de Chapman University en Santa Ana.

\n“Creo que la lectura es importante porque nosotras como latinas no se nos inculcó esa costumbre de ser lectoras”, dijo Flores. “Nuestras abuelas se reunían a platicar mientras tejían. Las nuevas generaciones conviven en el club de lectura”.
\n
\nPara ser miembro del Club de Lectura Las Comadres no cuesta nada y las tertulias están abiertas al público. La lista de los libros asignados se publican en la web de lascomadres.com\/latinolit y se dividen en uno para cada mes del año: 10 libros escritos por latinas, uno por un latino y uno juvenil. La mayoría de los obras se pueden encontrar en español aunque, por lo general, las conversaciones literarias se hacen en inglés. En el 2015 se ofrecieron teleconferencias gratuitas con autoras de renombre, como Chiquis Rivera, Eileen Truax y Cristina Saralegui.
