Teacher candidates Kate Markey, Glenda Vargas, Emily Miller, Sandra Loredo, Robert Moser and Victoria Hulett collaborated with their advisor, Dr. Noah Asher Golden, to share findings from a classroom\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/ces\/2016\/05\/27\/yorba-chapman-writing-partnership-publishing-party\/\">field study<\/a>\u00a0conducted in Spring 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Their presentation, titled \u201cAuthenticity Through Co-Authorship: The Power of Writing Alongside Our Students,&#8221; spoke to the importance of engaging young writers in personally relevant literacy practices and the manifold potential benefits of teacher-student collaboration. The group represented MACI and the Chapman University College of Educational Studies to an audience of educators from across the country and received positive reviews from their appointed discussant, Dr. Limarys Caraballo of Queens College of the City University of New York.<\/p>\n<p>After presenting, the teacher candidates were able, thanks to generous grants from the Student Government Association and Office of Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity, to attend insightful lectures and workshops, network with other educators and meet top scholars in the educational field. This included meeting with researchers whose scholarship the group had previously read in their <em>Teaching of Writing <\/em>(IES 412) and <em>Secondary Literacy<\/em>\u00a0(MACI 420) courses.\u00a0Other presenters at NCTE included former Assistant Secretary of Education Diane Ravitch and authors Ta-Nehisi Coates,\u00a0S.E.
