{"id":4217,"date":"2018-04-13T09:00:10","date_gmt":"2018-04-13T16:00:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2018\/04\/13\/special-guests-from-xito-presenting-at-3rd-annual-education-ethnic-studies\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T06:36:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T06:36:46","slug":"special-guests-from-xito-presenting-at-3rd-annual-education-ethnic-studies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2018\/04\/13\/special-guests-from-xito-presenting-at-3rd-annual-education-ethnic-studies\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Guests from XITO Presenting at 3rd Annual Education &amp; Ethnic Studies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Donna Ford <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/index.aspx\">Attallah College<\/a> of Educational Studies is excited to announce the Xicanx Institute for Teaching and Organizing (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.xicanoinstitute.org\/\">XITO<\/a>) will be joining us for the 3rd Annual Education and Ethnic Studies Summit on Saturday, April 28, 2018.<\/p>\n<p>Founded by former Mexican-American\/Raza Studies (MARS) teachers and scholar-activist Dr. Anita Fern\u00e1ndez, XITO is an urban education nonprofit that offers racial justice and diversity trainings to urban school districts, higher education institutions, school administrators, and classroom teachers. Their goal is to create inclusive environments through collaborative workshops and the development of culturally, socially, and historically responsive curriculum.<\/p>\n<p>XITO emerged as a consequence of Arizona\u2019s HB (House Bill) 2281, which eliminated the Mexican-American studies program for middle and high schools in Tucson, Arizona, in 2012. HB 2281 was overturned by a US District Court for the District of Arizona in August 2017. According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2017\/08\/23\/us\/arizona-mexican-american-ruling.html\"><em>New York Times<\/em><\/a>, Judge A. Wallace Tashima concluded that the bill \u201cinfringed on students\u2019 First and 14th Amendment rights.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Four of XITO\u2019s founders will be presenting workshops at this year\u2019s Education &amp;
