The ceremony is the culmination of two years of extended education courses and embedded community fieldwork.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4316\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4316\" style=\"width: 339px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4316\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Struppa.jpg\" alt=\"Padres Graduates and Chapman President Daniele Struppa\" width=\"339\" height=\"256\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Struppa.jpg 1323w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Struppa-300x227.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Struppa-1024x774.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Struppa-768x580.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 339px) 100vw, 339px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4316\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Padres Award Recipients and Chapman President Daniele Struppa<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Cultivating Community<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 2010, Chapman University\u2019s Attallah College of Educational Studies joined forces with Padres Unidos to develop the curriculum for the two-year professional and community volunteer training program.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Anaida Col\u00f3n-Mu\u00f1iz, Chapman Professor of Scholarly Practice, explained how important the program is for both participants and their community: \u201cParents in Padres Unidos are empowered through their participation and experience to become outstanding educators and mentors who are engaged in improving the lives of families. Over the years we have enjoyed an exceptional relationship with Padres, supporting them in their program efforts at Chapman, just as they have supported our programs at Centro Comunitario de Educaci\u00f3n that serve the Santa Ana community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When applying for the certificate program, interested individuals are thoroughly vetted in a rigorous selection process. During the second year, students take their specialization courses with an emphasis in one of the following roles: child and adolescent educator, case manager, parent educator, or group facilitator. In addition to coursework, students are required to complete two years of fieldwork and successfully pass comprehensive exams and submit a professional portfolio.<\/p>\n<p>Through this extended partnership with Chapman, Padres Unidos \u201cserves a vital function by bringing hope and transformation through education to the community. The community workers are ambassadors of goodwill who help families grow strong so that parents and children may fulfill their dreams and optimize their potential to help themselves and others,\u201d explained Dr. Suzanne SooHoo, Chapman Jack H. and Paula A. Hassinger Chair in Education and coauthor of a recent book about the Chapman-Padres partnership, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Lets-Chat_Cultivating-Community-University-Dialogue\/dp\/1975500407\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1528755585&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=let%27s+chat+cultivating&amp;dpID=41VHbxPA2eL&amp;preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&amp;dpSrc=srch\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Let\u2019s Chat: Cultivating Community University Dialogue<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Hope and Transformation through Education<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Following a keynote address by Dr. Susie Lopez-Guerra, Director of Community Relations at Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), each student received a certificate of completion from Chapman and a community service award from Congressman Lou Correa, the U.S. Representative for California&#8217;s 46th congressional district.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4314\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4314\" style=\"width: 247px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4314\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Lidia-Perez-Speech.jpg\" alt=\"Padres Grad Lidia Perez\" width=\"247\" height=\"363\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Lidia-Perez-Speech.jpg 680w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/06\/Padres-Grad-Lidia-Perez-Speech-204x300.jpg 204w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 247px) 100vw, 247px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4314\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Padres Student Speaker Lidia Perez<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Deputy Orange County Probation Officer Steve Sentman and Deputy Probation Officer Douglas Sanger also passed out special certificates to several of the community workers who completed their fieldwork in the juvenile hall program.<\/p>\n<p>The highlight of the ceremony was the two student speakers who shared their personal experiences, with stories of transformation and overcoming obstacles.<\/p>\n<p>Padres Unidos \u201coffered me a great gift, the opportunity to enter Chapman University and continue growing as a person and discovering abilities that I can use to benefit myself, my family, and my community,\u201d said Lidia Perez.<\/p>\n<p>Another student, Sonia Tlaseca, shared that the program required great sacrifice, but also an opportunity to learn and grow: \u201cDuring this challenging program, we have overcome obstacles and learned despite adversity and difficulties, each and every one of us here have met our objective. Let us be people that promote change in our community. Let us be aware of our potential to help others who need it most.
