{"id":4359,"date":"2018-08-03T13:45:35","date_gmt":"2018-08-03T20:45:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2018\/08\/03\/strengthening-bonds-across-borders\/"},"modified":"2018-08-03T13:45:35","modified_gmt":"2018-08-03T20:45:35","slug":"strengthening-bonds-across-borders","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2018\/08\/03\/strengthening-bonds-across-borders\/","title":{"rendered":"Strengthening Bonds Across Borders"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mercedes Martinez, President of the Federation of Puerto Rican Teachers (FMPR), spoke recently at Attallah College\u2019s Centro Comunitario de Educaci\u00f3n. In addition to detailing current events, she gave a short history of the FMPR\u2019s many year struggle to prevent the closure of community schools and its fight against the privatization of public schools.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4362\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4362\" style=\"width: 320px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4362\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2018\/08\/centro-martinez-talk.jpg\" alt=\"FMPR President Mercedes Martinez speaking at Centro Comunitario de Educaci\u00f3n\" width=\"320\" height=\"212\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FMPR President Mercedes Martinez speaking at Centro Comunitario de Educaci\u00f3n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Due to the prolonged debt crisis and declining enrollments, more than 150 community public schools were closed in 2017. The islands\u2019 troubles only deepened following Hurricane Maria, and another nearly 300 schools are slated to be closed this summer. This could mean the release of 6,000 teachers and school employees and the displacement of thousands of school children. Martinez explained the teachers and parents of Puerto Rico have led protest efforts to save their community schools, and teachers are ready to strike again if necessary.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe needs prior to the hurricane are same as they are now: fund the schools, pay the teachers what they should be paid, give materials to the teachers, provide the children the courses that they need, respect the autonomy that the teacher needs, and reinforce community schools. The community knows what the school and children of the school need. It\u2019s been a long fight,\u201d said Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>Martinez said the goal of her trip was to build solidarity bonds, not only with teachers but with universities, such as Chapman.<\/p>\n<p>The FMPR connection to Chapman grew out of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/index.aspx\">Attallah College<\/a> Professor Anaida Col\u00f3n-Mu\u00f1iz\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/news-and-stories\/2018\/02\/23\/chapman-professor-lends-a-hand-in-puerto-rico\/\">trip to Puerto Rico<\/a> this past January. Together with Martinez, Dr. Col\u00f3n-Mu\u00f1iz visited remote schools on the island to deliver money raised by the National Conference of Puerto Rican Women to support the schools\u2019 recovery efforts.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnaida has been great. When she went to Puerto Rico, she helped a lot of school communities, a lot of teachers and students. It\u2019s not just about charity; it\u2019s about solidarity and building bonds that will last,\u201d said Martinez.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this trip to California, Martinez also spoke on two panels at the United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) delegate assembly. She hopes that teachers in Puerto Rico and California learn about what is happening elsewhere and share their experiences. In her time as president, she\u2019s also met with teachers in North Carolina, West Virginia, and Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Col\u00f3n-Mu\u00f1iz said how important it is that Martinez was able to speak with the Chapman community: \u201cMercedes is so passionate. She is very informed about all the things that are happening nationally, in the United States and in Puerto Rico, as well as internationally. She is connected with educators all over Latin America who are involved in education struggles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ultimately, Martinez had a message for the Centro audience: \u201cWe are in this together.
