\u201cMore than any other time in history, it is important to be able to talk across the aisle, to be able to find common places to at least begin a dialogue.\u201d<\/em>
\n \u2014 Dr. Suzanne SooHoo, Attallah College Professor and Jack H. and Paula A. Hassinger Chair in Education<\/em><\/p>\n

Dozens of people gathered at Chapman University\u2019s Leatherby Libraries recently to celebrate the launch of a new book coauthored by Attallah College of Educational Studies<\/a> researchers Drs. Suzanne SooHoo, Tim Bolin, and Kevin J. Stockbridge and Padres Unidos\u2019 organizational leaders Patricia Huerta and Patty Perales Huerta-Meza.<\/p>\n

Their book, Let\u2019s Chat: Cultivating Community University Dialogue<\/a><\/em>, blossomed out of a nearly 10-year partnership between Chapman University and Padres Unidos. The book chronicles what they learned and serves as a map for educators and community members seeking to build similar relationships.<\/p>\n

Padres Unidos is a grassroots nonprofit organization devoted to parent education and school readiness. With a holistic family-based approach, Padres Unidos serves more than 4,500 low-income Latino students and their families in Orange County each year.<\/p>\n

Chapman University\u2019s partnership with Padres Unidos, which Let\u2019s Chat<\/em> celebrates and models, began in 2010. As part of Chapman\u2019s extended education program, the Attallah College of Educational Studies and Padres Unidos developed the curriculum for a two-year Community Worker Award program. In June 2018, the fourth cohort completed<\/a> the Chapman and Padres Unidos training program.<\/p>\n

Establishing a Dialogue <\/strong><\/p>\n

The panel discussion, moderated by Chapman President Daniele Struppa, centered around how the Chapman and Padres Unidos partnership differs from traditional university community relationships.<\/p>\n

\"Let's\u201cThe university has often been this space that has set itself off from and thinking itself better than the communities that surrounded them,\u201d said Dr. Kevin J. Stockbridge.<\/p>\n

The authors explained that universities and their surrounding communities historically live parallel lives in the same sandbox. They seldom turn toward one another, except maybe to throw sand at each other once in a while. Universities bring their expertise and solutions to fix perceived community problems, without engaging in a dialogue.<\/p>\n

\u201cOne of the first things we said as an organization to Chapman was, \u2018Don\u2019t change us.\u2019 We had tried partnerships with other universities before. It hadn\u2019t worked out,\u201d said Patty Perales Huerta-Meza, Let\u2019s Chat<\/em>\u00a0coauthor and Padres Unidos Division Director of Adult & Youth Forensic Services.<\/p>\n

From the start, things were different with Chapman, said Huerta-Meza. \u201cChapman has allowed Padres to be a true partner.\u201d<\/p>\n

Because the goal is to improve the overall health of our communities, said Dr. Soohoo, \u201cThat meant actually listening and learning what their questions were. We needed to saddle up side by side to figure out how to mutually solve issues together. It meant that the posture of expertise had to be left behind as we entered the community.\u201d<\/p>\n

Something for Everyone<\/strong><\/p>\n

To ensure Let\u2019s Chat <\/em>was open to anyone, the book utilizes a new genre that the authors call a \u201ccoffee table textbook.\u201d It\u2019s designed to be used as a classroom textbook or in an informal setting.<\/p>\n

Each of the chapters goes through the phases of the Padres and Chapman partnership as it evolved: \u201cthis new \u2018we\u2019 that hadn\u2019t existed.\u201d The chapters begin with a community story, which is followed by suggested discussion prompts and then an analysis section that breaks down the topic on a traditional academic level. The goal was to make the book accessible in many ways to the community as well as to academic audiences.<\/p>\n

Dr. SooHoo said the book\u2019s audience includes undergraduates who are out in the field doing service learning. It can help them understand how to ethically and responsibly approach communities with respect and dignity. The book can also help student teachers understand their role in society and how important it is to engage families and communities in a child\u2019s education.<\/p>\n

Community Impact<\/strong><\/p>\n

Lisa Gonzales-Solomon, principal of Madison Elementary in Santa Ana and the 2015 National Distinguished Principal for the State of California by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP), attended the book talk and shared her experience working with the graduates of the Chapman and Padres Unidos Community Worker Award program.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe work that was done here through the Chapman and Padres Unidos community worker program, I get to see it on the ground level at the schools. What you\u2019ve modeled here at the university is the same thing that they\u2019re modeling when they are working in the community,\u201d said Gonzales-Solomon.<\/p>\n

Overwhelmed by emotion, Gonzales-Solomon recalled seeing the Padres Unidos community workers in action. She has witnessed the Chapman-Padres graduates support parents without judgment and treat them with respect as they try to help them.<\/p>\n

\u201cI want to say thank you for your work. I\u2019ve seen it on the front lines, and it\u2019s absolutely beautiful what you\u2019ve done here.\u201d<\/p>\n
