One after the other, Attallah alumni and faculty were notified they\u2019d been selected for Orange County\u2019s high honor. Kelly Kennedy and Lisa Sparks with Attallah award recipients at OCDE School Counseling Awards Ceremony\" width=\"580\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/OCDE-SC-Sparks.jpg 836w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/OCDE-SC-Sparks-300x144.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/OCDE-SC-Sparks-768x367.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 580px) 100vw, 580px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4715\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Attallah award recipients with Dr. Kelly Kennedy and Dr. Lisa Sparks (OC Board of Education 5th District Trustee) at OCDE School Counseling Awards Ceremony<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThat so many of our Chapman Panthers were recognized this year with OCDE awards speaks volumes about our school counseling program,\u201d said Kelly Kennedy, Ph.D., Attallah College\u2019s Associate Dean of Graduate Programs. \u201cWe are so proud of our alumni and faculty and how dedicated they are to their schools and communities.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OCDE awards are given to school counselors at the elementary, middle and high school levels in an effort to \u201ccelebrate amazing K-12 school counselors in Orange County who are working tirelessly to support the needs of our students in all three areas: academic, social\/emotional, and college and career development.\u201d The goal of the OCDE recognition program is to spotlight Orange County\u2019s top professional counselors and their contributions to positive school climates and student success.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Role of the School Counselor<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Although the daily routines and duties of an elementary school counselor may differ from their colleagues working in middle and high schools, their fundamental job descriptions are essentially the same: help students in all areas (academic, personal, and developmental) with an eye toward their overall well-being, now and in the future. While that certainly includes course scheduling and college\/career planning, as members of the site and district leadership team, school counselors work collaboratively with teachers, administrators, parents, and students on a day-to-day basis.<\/p>\n<p>At all levels, school counselors provide wrap-around support, making resources available to students, from mental health to college readiness, and helping them overcome obstacles to improve learning outcomes.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4710\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4710\" style=\"width: 358px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4710\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/Menchaca-Mijares.jpg\" alt=\"Beau Menchaca and Dr. Al Mijares at OCDE School Counseling Awards Ceremony\" width=\"358\" height=\"318\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/Menchaca-Mijares.jpg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/02\/Menchaca-Mijares-300x267.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 358px) 100vw, 358px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4710\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beau Menchaca (MA \u201902) with OC Superintendent of Schools Dr. Al Mijares<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cSchool counselors have a tremendous impact in helping students achieve school success and build a strong foundation for their future,\u201d said Christine Olmstead, OCDE\u2019s associate superintendent of Educational Services. \u201cThey are the students\u2019 advocate when they need a voice, active listener when they need nurturing, and the compass when they need direction and guidance. It is certainly not an easy task.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>School Counselor Advocate Awards<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Attallah College alumni were honored for their work in elementary, middle, and high schools this year:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Katerina Sorrell (MA \u201914, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/graduate\/lpcc.aspx\">LPCC<\/a>), school counselor at Gates Elementary School and six other elementary schools in the Saddleback Valley Unified School District<\/li>\n<li>Andrew Fredriksz (MA \u201916, LPCC), school counselor at Aliso Viejo Middle School in the Capistrano Unified School District<\/li>\n<li>Beau Menchaca (MA \u201902), school counselor at Century High School in the Santa Ana Unified School District<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Katerina Sorrell, who was one of the first Attallah graduates to also complete the LPCC (Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor) requirements while studying at Chapman, reflected on her award: &#8220;As school counselors, our highest honor is being told we\u2019ve made a difference, not just in an individual, but in an entire family. For a counselor, life success is about improving the world \u2026 one amazing person at a time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>All the recipients were presented with their awards at a <a href=\"http:\/\/newsroom.ocde.us\/counselors-awards-program-honors-six-from-oc\/\">recent OCDE board meeting<\/a>. They will also be recognized at the Orange County Counselor Symposium later this fall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Counselor Advocate Award<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For the first time this year, OCDE also gave out the Counselor Advocate of the Year Award to recognize those who advocate on behalf of school counselors and support the implementation of comprehensive counseling programs that incorporate the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schoolcounselor.org\/school-counselors-members\/asca-national-model\">ASCA (American School Counselor Association) National Model<\/a>. Her nominees described how diligently Pianta advocates for those in her district. One colleague wrote, \u201cWe are fortunate to have such an influential leader at our district, continuously promoting advocacy, collaboration, and leadership, which in turn teaches us to create systematic change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Attallah Program Recognition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>With awards for elementary, middle, and high school counselors and school counselor advocate, Attallah College affiliates swept all four categories, demonstrating the maturity and impact of Chapman\u2019s program.<\/p>\n<p>Pianta believes the field really recognizes that Chapman\u2019s school counseling program prepares students to really look at their school site\u2019s core issues and come up with a school-wide plan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverywhere I go, when I do site visits or even when we interview students, Chapman alumni stand out,\u201d she said. \u201cI think our faculty do a good job of ensuring that they\u2019re very knowledgeable in addressing the needs of the whole
