{"id":4923,"date":"2019-05-16T09:52:53","date_gmt":"2019-05-16T16:52:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2019\/05\/16\/a-foot-in-both-worlds\/"},"modified":"2026-07-20T06:36:47","modified_gmt":"2026-07-20T06:36:47","slug":"a-foot-in-both-worlds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2019\/05\/16\/a-foot-in-both-worlds\/","title":{"rendered":"A Foot in Both Worlds"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Chapman University\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/centers-and-partnerships\/thompson-policy-institute\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Thompson Policy Institute (TPI)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> recently held its fourth annual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/centers-and-partnerships\/thompson-policy-institute\/disability-summit\/index.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">DisAbility Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, where it shared its latest research findings and reinforced the importance of its community partnerships. The overarching theme of the summit was the principle that, at TPI, research informs practice and practice informs research. TPI\u2019s Director Don Cardinal, Ph.D., described the relationship between research and practice as interactive. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing we\u2019ve learned at the Thompson Policy Institute, it\u2019s that you can\u2019t create policy in an ivory tower,\u201d Dr. Cardinal said. \u201cYou have to understand what\u2019s going on, be able to study and develop your research questions, and bring that back to the community. We\u2019ve developed teams to create research and action in the community.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Community Partnerships<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TPI prides itself on its community partnerships, which include the Regional Center of Orange County (RCOC), a nonprofit organization contracted by the State of California to provide lifelong services and support for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, and Tomorrow\u2019s Leadership Collaborative (TLC), a fully inclusive public charter school located a short distance from Chapman\u2019s Orange campus. <\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4943\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4943\" style=\"width: 496px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-4943\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/05\/disability-summit-fast.jpg\" alt=\"Dr. Don Cardinal on stage at 2019 DisAbility Summit\" width=\"496\" height=\"292\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/05\/disability-summit-fast.jpg 750w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/83\/2019\/05\/disability-summit-fast-300x176.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 496px) 100vw, 496px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4943\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dr. Don Cardinal speaking about FAST at the 2019 DisAbility Summit<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TPI provides education and training for RCOC coordinators and supervisors, who provide services to more 21,000 Orange County residents with developmental disabilities and their families. TPI has also extended its partnership by serving as an educational consultant through ongoing workshops to support families and schools in the Individualized Education Program (IEP) process. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As a founding partner in the Center for Autism and Neurodevelopmental Disorders, TPI also oversees the operations of the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/education\/centers-and-partnerships\/thompson-policy-institute\/action\/education-and-training.aspx\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Family and School Together (FAST) program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which offers a range of services to help youth, their families, and professionals in school settings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">At its recent DisAbility Summit, TPI announced that it is continuing to expand its research-based education and training services.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe\u2019ve just now come to an agreement with the Regional Center of Orange County to offer a similar program at the Regional Center, and I\u2019m very happy to say the Thompson Autism Center at the Children\u2019s Hospital of Orange County will have a more expanded version of FAST,\u201d Dr. Cardinal said. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Action-Based Research<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Alongside with research presentations on the state of inclusive education in California and the need for girls and women with disabilities in the STEM fields,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">TPI invited TLC\u2019s founding principal and executive director Jessica Tunney, Ph.D., to share a bit about the day-to-day operations at TLC and how the school brings the inclusive education model to life. Dr.\u00a0Tunney explained TLC is a new tuition-free public school, built from the ground up as a space for innovation and for &#8220;learning about learning&#8221; and\u00a0&#8220;learning about teaching.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In partnership with school such as TLC, the Thompson Policy Institute gains\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">insight using a unique two-way model that both informs and is informed by TPI\u2019s research.\u00a0Attallah College student teachers have the opportunity to serve in TLC classrooms and observe inclusive teaching practices and assistive technologies in practice.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0In turn, TPI uses TLC\u2019s feedback on the effectiveness of specific research-based practices to adapt and renew its research question and methods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ultimately, TPI\u2019s long-term goal is foster inclusive education for all students, in California and beyond, and to inspire all education professionals to engage diversity rather than treat it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em>Display Image at Top: 2019 DisAbility Summit speakers Drs.
