Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience in California. In addition to holding a Multiple Subject Credential,\u202fafter August 1, 2025, all TK teachers must also meet\u202fone\u202fof the following requirements:<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Have completed at least 24 credits in early childhood education, child development, or both, from an accredited institution of higher education;\u202f<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Have professional experience in a classroom setting with preschool-aged children that a local educational agency (LEA; school district or county office of education)\u00a0deems\u00a0comparable to 24 units;\u202f<\/span>or<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Possess a Child Development Teacher Permit issued\u00a0from\u00a0the Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CTC).\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    Verification that a teacher meets the TK employment eligibility requirements is the responsibility of\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0Local Education Agency (LEA; school district or county office of education), not\u00a0<\/span>the candidate\u2019s institution of higher education<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Separately, an individual may qualify to teach TK by earning a PK\u20133 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential. This credential may be applied<\/span>\u00a0for as an \u2018add on\u2019 after the Multiple Subject\u00a0<\/span>c<\/span>redential<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>is granted, provided the Multiple\u00a0<\/span>Subject<\/span>\u00a0credential holder meets one of the\u00a0<\/span>r<\/span>equirements in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>#1-3 above.<\/span>\u00a0Those interested in \u2018adding on\u2019 the PK-3 Early Childhood Education Specialist Instruction Credential to their Multiple Subject Credential may do so by applying directly to CTC<\/span>\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span>submitting<\/span>\u00a0the required documentation and fees.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Candidates can take coursework related to TK eligibility at any accredited institution of higher education, including Chapman University. Chapman students <\/span>who\u00a0<\/span>opt to enroll at another institution in addition to Chapman University (called\u202fconcurrent enrollment) to obtain\u202f<\/span>additional<\/span>\u202fcredits toward fulfilling the TK eligibility requirement<\/span>\u00a0must adhere to the concurrent enrollment rules in the\u202f<\/span><\/span>Chapman University Undergraduate and Graduate Catalogs<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Note, enrollments across institutions\u202f<\/span>in excess of<\/span>\u202fcertain credits<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>may\u202fimpact<\/span>\u202f<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>financial aid and are critical to consider before registering at more than one institution of higher education.\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

    Courses at Chapman University that\u00a0<\/span>may be eligible<\/span>\u00a0to meet the 24-credit requirement include the following<\/span>; however, official determination is dependent on the LEA\u2019s decision<\/span>\u00a0and regulations in effect at the time the candidate\u00a0<\/span>submits<\/span>\u00a0the courses for LEA review<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Candidates should expect to\u00a0<\/span>submit<\/span>\u00a0c<\/span>ourse syllabi<\/span>\u00a0and\/or other documents that show course content\u00a0<\/span>(course outlines, standards<\/span>\u00a0met<\/span>, etc.) to the LEA for\u00a0<\/span>determination of final eligibility<\/span>:\u202f<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
