Chapman University\u2019s Attallah College of Educational Studies hosted its third annual Imagining a Resilient Future in the Schools conference on Nov. 7, 2025, bringing together educators, school psychologists, counselors, mental health\u00a0<\/span>professionals<\/span>\u00a0and community partners to address one of the most pressing issues facing youth: mental health in a digital world.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The conference examined how technology, social media<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>and gaming shape young people\u2019s daily lives and well-being. Hosted by Attallah College\u2019s School Counseling and School Psychology programs, the event welcomed attendees from Chapman and partner school districts committed to supporting student mental health in and beyond the classroom.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Associate Professor of Counseling and School Psychology\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Amy Jane Griffiths<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0opened the conference by recognizing the complex role digital media plays in students\u2019 lives. \u201cDigital platforms have transformed the way young people socialize, learn and cope,\u201d Griffith<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0said. \u201cThey have also introduced profound challenges, from rapid social comparison and cyberbullying to addictive design, identity\u00a0<\/span>struggles<\/span>\u00a0and increased exposure to trauma. The question is not whether youth will be online. The question is how we guide them toward healthier,\u00a0<\/span>safer<\/span>\u00a0and more empowered digital lives.\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Co-led by Griffiths and Associate Professor of School Psychology\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Kelly Kennedy<\/span><\/span><\/a>, the conference was co-sponsored by Chapman\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Thompson Policy Institute on Disability.<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>The first keynote, \u201cAdolescent Mental Health in the Age of AI,\u201d was delivered by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Candice L. Odgers<\/span><\/span><\/a>, professor and associate dean at the University of California, Irvine, whose work examines what it means to grow up in the digital age. Odgers shared more than two decades of research on how smartphones, social\u00a0<\/span>media,<\/span>\u00a0and AI-enabled technologies intersect with adolescent development.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The second session, \u201cThe Untethered Student: Supporting Student Wellbeing and Learning in a Hyper-Connected World,\u201d featured digital\u00a0<\/span>sociologist<\/span>\u00a0and University of Southern California lecturer\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Julie M. Albright<\/span><\/span><\/a>. Author of\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Left to Their Own Devices: How Digital Natives Are Reshaping the American Dream<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span>she\u00a0<\/span>explore<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0how constant connectivity is reshaping students\u2019 development, attention and relationships and outlined areas where youth are becoming increasingly disconnected from family life, school\u00a0<\/span>communities<\/span>\u00a0and themselves.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The third talk, \u201cOnline Games and Adolescent Mental Health: Designing Online Games for Learning, Growth, Empathy and Connection,\u201d was presented by\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Constance Steinkuehler<\/span><\/span><\/a>, professor of informatics at UC Irvine and co-director of the Games + Learning + Society Center. Steinkuehler shared her research on multiplayer online games, digital culture and\u00a0<\/span>youth learning and discussed how game design and player communities can influence empathy,\u00a0<\/span>cooperation<\/span>\u00a0and social connection.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The day concluded with \u201cYouth Voices Leading the Way: Peer-to-Peer Mental Health Advocacy in the Digital Age,\u201d a panel featuring Orange County Department of Education partners and high school student leaders. Facilitated by CSP graduate student Tamara\u00a0<\/span>Tavira<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>the session included remarks from OCDE representatives Alicia Escobar and Rose Aguilera, who outlined regional efforts to promote substance use prevention, mental health\u00a0<\/span>awareness<\/span>\u00a0and positive youth developmen<\/span>t.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

As in previous years, the conference highlighted the\u00a0<\/span><\/span>Julian\u00a0<\/span>Sadasivaiah<\/span>\u00a0Endowed Graduate Student Fellowship in Mental Health<\/span><\/span><\/a>, which was presented at the event for the first time. The 2025 honoree, Reva Blitz, a third-year\u00a0<\/span>graduate<\/span>\u00a0student interning in the Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District, is pursuing\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0credential<\/span>\u00a0in school psychology<\/span>, with\u00a0<\/span>additional<\/span>\u00a0emphasis<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>in<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>clinical counseling<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span>Reva<\/span>h<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>has<\/span>\u00a0focused her work on supporting youth with disabilities and chronic health conditions through trauma-informed,\u00a0<\/span>strengths<\/span>-based care.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
