In 2026, every graduating teacher education candidate passed the California Teaching Performance Assessment before the end of student teaching.<\/span><\/i>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Reaching 100% is meaningful. Doing it twice\u00a0signals\u00a0preparation, not luck.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For the second consecutive year, every teacher education candidate who graduated from Attallah College of Educational Studies at Chapman University passed the California Teaching Performance Assessment (CalTPA) by the time they received their credential.\u00a0In\u00a02026, the milestone carried an\u00a0added\u00a0distinction: every\u00a0graduate\u00a0cleared that bar before the end of student teaching.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u00a0timing\u00a0matters.\u00a0Student\u00a0teaching is the culminating clinical experience,\u00a0when candidates demonstrate\u00a0in real classrooms\u00a0that they are ready to lead a class of their own. Passing the\u00a0CalTPA\u00a0before\u00a0it ends\u00a0means Attallah’s 2026 graduates entered\u00a0their final\u00a0weeks\u00a0not as candidates\u00a0still\u00a0trying to cross a finish line, but as teachers already cleared for professional practice.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT THE RESEARCH SAYS ABOUT PROGRAMS LIKE THIS ONE<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

California was among the first states\u00a0to require a teaching performance assessment\u00a0for\u00a0licensure, and\u00a0statewide data\u00a0show\u00a0how rare Attallah’s results are. A 2024 Learning Policy Institute brief\u00a0identified three preparation factors most strongly associated with TPA success:\u00a0strong\u00a0program support for the TPA process, frequent and substantive clinical feedback from faculty supervisors, and deep content-specific training in teaching\u00a0literacy and mathematics. Candidates\u00a0in\u00a0programs with the highest\u00a0clinical feedback\u00a0ratings\u00a0were more than twice as likely to pass a TPA across all attempts, compared\u00a0with\u00a0candidates\u00a0in\u00a0the lowest-rated programs. Literacy preparation\u00a0showed similarly\u00a0strong\u00a0effects, with candidates from the strongest programs showing nearly twice the odds of passing.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

These are not incidental features of Attallah’s\u00a0programs. They\u00a0are\u00a0the architecture of\u00a0its teacher preparation.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

THE FELLOWSHIP THAT SHARPENED THE FOCUS<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Attallah College\u00a0Dean Roxanne Greitz Miller, Ed.D. has been direct about the role TPA performance plays in\u00a0understanding\u00a0program quality. As a 2023-24 Deans for Impact fellow, she worked\u00a0with\u00a0national peers examining\u00a0what makes teacher preparation effective, with\u00a0attention to\u00a0assessments that translate\u00a0preparation into measurable classroom readiness.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The fellowship sharpened an\u00a0existing conviction: TPA outcomes are not\u00a0merely\u00a0a compliance metric. They\u00a0signal\u00a0whether candidates have\u00a0learned to teach\u00a0and whether their program gave them the conditions to do so. The trajectory from 97% in 2024 to 100% in 2025 and 2026 reflects\u00a0that conviction\u00a0built into\u00a0program design, from\u00a0clinical placements\u00a0to how faculty supervisors observe and respond to candidates in the field.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

“This is what preparation should look like,” Dean Miller has said. “Not students hoping they pass, but teachers who have already demonstrated they are ready.”<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

WHAT IT MEANS FOR ATTALLAH GRADUATES AND THEIR STUDENTS<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Every Attallah graduate who enters a California classroom this fall does so\u00a0with both\u00a0a credential\u00a0and\u00a0documented evidence that they can plan instruction, teach effectively, and reflect on student learning in ways that meet the state’s professional standards for beginning teachers. The CalTPA is designed to assess\u00a0those capacities, and Attallah’s candidates have now met that standard completely and consecutively.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Students\u00a0in those classrooms benefit directly. The LPI research underscores that the preparation experiences connected to TPA success are\u00a0also\u00a0connected to teacher effectiveness once candidates become teachers of record.\u00a0When the\u00a0pipeline from preparation to practice\u00a0works as intended,\u00a0it\u00a0produces teachers\u00a0ready on day one.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

At Chapman University, that pipeline is working.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
