{"id":976,"date":"2012-03-21T08:30:57","date_gmt":"2012-03-21T15:30:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/education\/2012\/03\/21\/ethnic-studies-inclusive-or-divisive\/"},"modified":"2012-03-21T08:30:57","modified_gmt":"2012-03-21T15:30:57","slug":"ethnic-studies-inclusive-or-divisive","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/education\/2012\/03\/21\/ethnic-studies-inclusive-or-divisive\/","title":{"rendered":"Ethnic Studies: Inclusive or Divisive"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Arizona has been strongly criticized for its stand on immigration policy.\u00a0 Their collective views on all issues related to immigrants have been largely negative.\u00a0 The questions are, &#8220;Who is the &#8220;they&#8221; and why does their view win?&#8221;\u00a0 Additionally, who is doing all the criticizing? Obviously, some are expressing dissenting opinions. Where are these people when laws and policies are set?<\/p>\n<p>Do we assume that all people who reject this anti-immigrant trend are illegal immigrants, or are there a large percentage of people who simply remain complacent?\u00a0 The film\u00a0<strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/on.fb.me\/w2dGK4\" target=\"_blank\">Precious Knowledge<\/a><\/em><\/strong>\u00a0was screened by CES recently.\u00a0 It chronicles the story of a school board decision to ban an ethnic studies program, and it shows the early stages of student and teacher protests.\u00a0 More recently, these students decided to take a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/us\/2012\/01\/14\/ruling-on-ethnic-students-program-splits-arizona-community\/\" target=\"_blank\">different approach<\/a>.\u00a0 This exercise of an amendment right does not seem to pertain to these students.\u00a0 They are characterized as uncivilized.\u00a0 Dialogue on the Tucson school district ending its controversial Ethnic Studies program months ago continues in the CES.<\/p>\n<p>We need not go too far to see this uneven distribution of our civil liberties.\u00a0 Right in our own back yard, a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/2011\/09\/23\/irvine-11-guilty_n_978408.html\" target=\"_blank\">California jury found 10 Muslim students guilty<\/a>\u00a0of disrupting the Israeli ambassador&#8217;s university speech about U.S.-Israel relations.\u00a0 Have we learned nothing from our past?<\/p>\n<p>By Marisol Rexach, Doctoral
