Three Fowler School of Engineering<\/span> (FSE)<\/span> students joined Interim Dean Tom Piechota<\/span> and his wife Colleen<\/span> in early November<\/span> for a special <\/span>lunch<\/span>eon<\/span> in <\/span>their<\/span> home <\/span>with the Swenson family. <\/span>In 2021, the Swenson <\/span>f<\/span>amily<\/span> made a generous $5 million donation<\/span> to the <\/span><\/span>Fowler School of Engineering<\/span><\/span><\/a>, creating a home for the next generation of engineers in the Swenson Family Hall of Engineering.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Swenson family\u2019s philanthropic efforts<\/span> began with Jim Swenson.<\/span> Jim was a noble engineer who famously brought high-tech circuit boards out of the research labs and into our everyday lives. <\/span>His original circuit boards were used by major tech companies like Apple, IBM, and Motorola. <\/span>His <\/span>impressive <\/span>impact in engineering continues to inspire current and future engineers.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Through much ambition and abundant generosity, the Swenson <\/span>f<\/span>amily has done more for the future of engineering by providing a home for the students attending the <\/span><\/span>Fowler School of Engineering<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>. <\/span>B<\/span>eyond the physical infrastructure, the Swenson family\u2019s commitment to engineering students and the unwavering value of community has profoundly <\/span>impacted<\/span> Chapman University.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Jim<\/span>, who passed away in <\/span>2018,<\/span> valued his connections with future engineers<\/span>. So, this luncheon hosted by Piechota served as a catalyst for the Swenson <\/span>f<\/span>amily to further their connection to our students. <\/span>Jim\u2019s wife<\/span> and president of the <\/span><\/span>Swenson Family Foundation<\/span><\/span><\/a>,<\/span> Susan Swenson, their daughter, Cheryl Lentz, <\/span>a member of Chapman\u2019s Board of Trustees, and her husband, author Christopher Lentz, along with their daughters,<\/span> Mirand<\/span>a<\/span> and Allison Lentz \u201813, proudly<\/span> represente<\/span>d<\/span> the Swenson Family Foundation<\/span>. <\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\n

“What my dad loved most to do on campuses was <\/span>meeting<\/span> and <\/span>talking<\/span> with the students.<\/span> He loved learning about where they came from, what they were studying, and their <\/span>plans for the future<\/span>. Like Dad, we also enjoy meeting with the students for a variety of reasons; it reminds us of Dad, it brings Dad to them, and it allows us to learn about their journeys. It is always \u2018awe\u2019-inspiring to hear them speak about their goals for the future. It gives us hope that our world will be in capable hands,\u201d <\/span><\/span><\/em>said Cheryl Lentz.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The notable family met with Chapman engineering students to learn about the students\u2019 experiences during their time at the Fowler School of Engineering. <\/span>Chapman engineering students Olivia Chilvers, Matt <\/span>Shugarte<\/span>, and Zuleyka Urieta me<\/span>t with the Swenson family <\/span>to express the significant impact <\/span>of <\/span>the <\/span>facility <\/span>in cultivating a meaningful community among <\/span>peers<\/span> and <\/span>professors<\/span> and discuss the<\/span> research<\/span> projects<\/span> they\u2019ve<\/span> participated<\/span> in and the<\/span> internships<\/span> and professional positions<\/span> they<\/span>\u2019ve<\/span> held<\/span> while completing their studies<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ever since his college days back in 1958, Jim Swenson valued the chain of generosity, and Jim and Susan practiced philanthropy through their gifts to various organizations to keep the chain active. <\/span>The Swenson family continues their philanthropic efforts with their generous support for the Chapman University community<\/span>, <\/span>as well as <\/span>other organizations that further <\/span>science and engineering <\/span>education<\/span> and<\/span> support <\/span>children\u2019s health<\/span>,<\/span> among other causes<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cMeeting the Swenson family left me with a sense of immense gratitude.<\/span> To meet them and share my experience and research, I knew it was nothing short of special. The Swenson Family Hall feels more personal now that I can attach a family and a mission now that I had the chance to meet them<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d shared electrical engineering major <\/span><\/span>Matt <\/span>Shugarte<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Computer science major and M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science student<\/span><\/span>,<\/span><\/span><\/span> Olivia Chilvers<\/a> recalls setting up circuit boards and 3D printers alongside faculty and industry representatives during the opening of the Swenson Family Hall of Engineering. <\/span>\u201cI have been fortunate to have helpful professors who encourage me every day in class.<\/span> Thank you for <\/span>all of<\/span> the support that has given me and other students the ability to pursue our career goals while being around some of the best people<\/span>,<\/span>\u201d shared Chilver<\/span>s.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

From the first day the Swenson Family Hall of Engineering opened its doors three years ago, the Chapman community has flourished from the impact of the building. From innovative learning in our <\/span>state-of-the-art<\/span> research labs to the thrilling environment of <\/span>our Makerspace<\/span> – <\/span>the Swenson <\/span>f<\/span>amily has helped <\/span>facilitate<\/span> a culture of innovation.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
