I heard an old James Taylor song come on the radio: <em>You Can Close Your Eyes<\/em>. In the song, James\u2019 phrase, \u201cclose your eyes,\u201d is about trust. And that day I imagined that the singer of the song is Jesus, building community among his followers, singing to all of us: \u201cI can sing this song. And you can sing this song when I am gone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ten years ago we started singing it at the end of the Disciples on Campus (DOC) sponsored Wednesday Night Worship. Here are the words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Well the sun is surely sinking down<br \/>\nBut the moon is slowly rising,<br \/>\nSo this old world must still be spinning &#8217;round<br \/>\nAnd I still love you.<\/p>\n<p>So close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it&#8217;s all right.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know no love songs and I can&#8217;t sing the blues anymore.<br \/>\nBut I can sing this song and you can sing this song<br \/>\nWhen I&#8217;m gone.<\/p>\n<p>Well it won&#8217;t be long before another day.<br \/>\nWe&#8217;re gonna have a good time.<br \/>\nAnd no one&#8217;s gonna take that time away&#8211;<br \/>\nYou can stay as long as you like.<\/p>\n<p>Only close your eyes, you can close your eyes, it&#8217;s all right.<br \/>\nI don&#8217;t know no love songs and I can&#8217;t sing the blues anymore.<br \/>\nBut I can sing this song and you can sing this song<br \/>\nWhen I&#8217;m gone.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>So much has happened with this song.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>We sing it hopefully to incoming DOC students\u2014\u201cwe\u2019re gonna have good time.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>We sing it soulfully on retreat\u2014\u201cand I still love you.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>We sing it tearfully to graduating seniors\u2014\u201cYou can sing this song when I\u2019m gone.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>I have had alumni long gone send me videos upon hearing the song on the radio in their car, the muzak in an elevator, a beach bar in Hawaii.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This school year one of our juniors, Becca Foster, started taping the song every time we sang it and she put it all together in a brief video. And it is a closing song about trust, the continuity of community, and the power of love that is helping us stay strong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Reflection by Rev.
