If so, you&#8217;re not alone.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/health\/2020\/10\/28\/presidential-election-stress-how-cope-anxiety-and-fear\/6049521002\/\">Nearly 70% of Americans<\/a> report feeling apprehensive and nervous over the 2020 presidential election. That&#8217;s up from 52% in 2016! There&#8217;s now even a term for it &#8212; Election Stress Disorder (ESD). Write them in your journal. Share them with others. Invite creativity. Discover, imagine, engage your hopes and fears, the beauty and<br \/>\nugliness of our world. Write, read, paint, sing, dance, soar.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong> Take a breather <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Breathe. Breathe. Breathe some more. Take time in your day\u2014at any moment\u2014to take five to ten, slow, deep breaths. Doing so will regulate your body\u2019s \u201cstress-response\u201d system and boost your \u201crelaxation-response\u201d system to feel calm and centered.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong> Be adaptive, not reactive to change<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>If your outside world feels \u201cout of control,\u201d focus on your inner world. The concept of \u201cneuroplasticity\u201d reveals how you have the ability to rewire and retrain the brain to be <em>more adaptive<\/em> to change. Focus on what you can manage. Let go of what you can\u2019t. Contemplative practices\u2014such as meditation, practicing gratitude, or mindful breathing\u2014empower you to be <em>less reactive<\/em> to change and uncertainty.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"4\">\n<li><strong> Self-care isn\u2019t selfish<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Self-care is an essential form of solace to help you manage stress and cope with anxiety. Be sure to take your MEDS (Meditate, Exercise, Diet &amp; Sleep)<strong>. <\/strong>See your health and wellness holistically\u2014mind, body, and spirit. Science affirms that practicing physical, emotional and spiritual self-care can equally strengthen your immune system and increase resilience.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"5\">\n<li><strong> Focus on the present, not \u201cfuture fear\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In times of change and uncertainty, it\u2019s natural for your brain to \u201ccatastrophize\u201d or spin \u201cworst-case scenarios\u201d. Recognize that certain things are simply out of your control\u2014the weather, other people\u2019s behaviors, the future in general. Focus your awareness on something real, enduring, or beautiful in your present surroundings. Look up often. Discover the wonder and joy that are always there and forever present.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"6\">\n<li><strong>Unity in community<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Now more than ever, we need to show up for one another. Listen compassionately. Practice empathy. Message the people you care about. Connect, even virtually, to a community that is helping people in need in your area. Make a plan to be with others on \u201celection night\u201d or the day the results of the election become known.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"7\">\n<li><strong> Unplug, wisely. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Embrace social media only if it inspires you. While staying aware of developments, don\u2019t let \u201celection anxiety\u201d overwhelm you. Forgive yourself when and if it does. Block notifications and the constant barrage of news and social media that heighten your anxiety. Even better, take a 24-hour \u201csocial-media\u201d break every week. You will notice the difference.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"8\">\n<li><strong> Practice kindness. Practice gratitude. Practice hope.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>There is a natural tendency in times of chaos and confusion\u2014especially during election cycles\u2014to view \u201cthe other\u201d as a potential threat. Stand with those most vulnerable and who suffer the brunt of prejudice, bigotry and fear. Remember we are in this together.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"9\">\n<li><strong> Embrace your spiritual, religious, humanist, cultural, or other<\/strong><strong> traditions<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Find strength and solace in traditions, texts, rituals, practices, upcoming holy times and seasons. Pray, meditate, reflect, silently, through song, in readings, through ancestors.<\/p>\n<ol start=\"10\">\n<li><strong> Remember you are not alone. Ever. <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Remember that fear is not the final word. Take this period as an opportunity for inner exploration and opening your awareness. You are surrounded by care and support. Reach out. Remember the long view of history, the rhythms and cycles of nature, the invisible threads that connect us all. Humanity has endured much worse. We will prevail.<\/p>\n<p>Learn to embrace this time of confusion and change as a transitional state of opportunity\u2014a sacred gift to create, innovate, refresh, and renew. This unprecedented historical moment may provide newness in the future we never thought possible.
