Global warming raises temperatures, which leads to an increase in the frequency and severity of wildfires. These wildfires, in turn, put more carbon into the atmosphere, creating a dangerous feedback loop. Additionally, the increased severity of these wildfires puts people living in wildfire-prone areas at risk of death or losing their homes. One solution to this is green firebreaks. These are sections of fire-resistant plants designed to act as a barrier to an oncoming wildfire. These firebreaks can be planted around communities to provide an environmentally friendly way to protect people and their houses. Our GCI project aims to create a metric to calculate the fire resistance of plants. Our aim is to implement this metric on a broader scale to calculate the relative fire resistance of different plants to determine their suitability for use in green firebreaks.
