ATEP hosts high school athletic training

In January, the College of Educational Studies’ Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP) hosted two athletic training workshops for more than 80 high school students from Oxford Academy and Valley High School. The high school students had a base knowledge of athletic training, and these workshops provided a hands-on clinical experience to broaden their understanding of the athletic training profession.

Both workshops were coordinated by senior Chapman athletic training student Annie Nalepa, with the help from faculty member Jason Bennett, DA, ATC and numerous ATEP students from all levels in the program.  The high school students were divided into three groups which gave more individual attention to each student as they completed three seminars.  In the first seminar, Oxford Academy students learned ankle and knee rehabilitation exercises. In the second session, they practiced new techniques for prophylactic ankle taping. During the final seminar, an array of therapeutic modalities including ice bath, ultrasound, and electrical stimulation were demonstrated. With Valley High School, students were taught an additional seminar regarding the immediate care of athletes with spinal injuries.

The ATEP students enjoyed this unique teaching opportunity, and the high school students found the experience both fun and educational.  The ATEP looks forward to providing continual athletic training workshops to local high schools for many years to come.
