Professor awarded renewed research fellowship for satellite remote sensing project

Ramesh P. Singh, Ph.D., professor, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Schmid College of Science, will visit
Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Chemistry
in Mainz, Germany for three months to work with the institute’s
satellite remote sensing group
. The visit is a renewed research stay sponsored by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation.

Dr. Singh was awarded a research fellowship by
Alexander von Humboldt the Foundation
in 1991, and he spent one year in 1994 at the Institute for Space Sciences, Free University, Berlin, Germany.  The foundation chooses from its 25,000 alumni in the worldwide in deciding which research grants to fund. He is Chapman University’s only Humboldt Fellow.

With this renewed award, Dr. Singh will spend June, July and August working with European satellite data to study atmospheric pollution problem over northern parts of India.  He will also compare atmospheric aerosols data measured by NASA and European satellite data over India.

Dr. Singh visited Germany several times in the past with support from the Humboldt Foundation. During his forthcoming visit to Germany he will also explore student exchange opportunities between German universities and Chapman.

Dr. Singh has collaborated with the Max Planck Institute for two years and set up its Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) instrument, which measures NO2 concentrations.
