Mark Axelrod, Ph.D., Department of English, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, has been awarded a Fulbright Fellowship to teach screenwriting at Stockholm University in December.

In addition, his second volume of literary essays, Women In Love And Emotional States, will be published by Palgrave Macmillan in January 2015. Palgrave Macmillan previously published No Symbols Where None Intended in June 2014. His last screenplay, Of Gold & Ashes, received an Honorable Mention at the Williamsburg International Film Festival. It is the fourth screenplay award he’s received in 2014.

Jennifer Bevan, Ph.D., associate professor, and Lisa Sparks, Ph.D., professor, both with the Department of Communication Studies, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and communications studies alumna Megan Cummings ’14, co-authored a research paper that has been named the Top Paper by the Interpersonal Communication Interest Group of the Western States Communication Association. The paper, titled “A longitudinal test of the serial argument process model: Implications for stress and physical health symptoms,” will be presented at the annual meeting of the Western States Communication Association in Spokane, Wash., in February 2015.

Don Guy, assistant professor, College of Performing Arts, recently served as lighting designer and director for Masters of Illusion Live – Believe the Impossible! Based on the hit TV series Masters of Illusion, this live stage production played to sold-out theaters in Minnesota, Washington, D.C., Massachusetts, New Jersey, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Professor Guy arranged to have his former student and Chapman alumnus Steven Bravek ’13 join the tour as lighting director so that Guy could plan and manage lighting and design for American Celebration.

Reginald Gilyard, dean of the Argyros School of Business and Economics, has been appointed to the Board for the Association for Advancing Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International. AACSB International is a global membership association for the management education industry. Members include collegiate schools of business, as well as corporate, nonprofit, and public sector organizations that wish to work or connect with business educators and the management education industry.

Wenshan Jia, Ph.D., professor, Department of Communication Studies, Wilkinson College of Humanities and Social Sciences, was interviewed on several issues about China by the Italian newspaper Il manifesto.

Ramesh P. Singh, Ph.D., professor, School of Earth and Environmental Sciences, Schmid College of Science and Technology, has been elected President of the Natural Hazards Focus Group of the American Geophysical Union (AGU). AGU has more than 60,000 members worldwide and about 7,000 AGU members are affiliated with the Natural Hazards Group. In this role Singh will organize sessions on natural hazards aimed at advancing both scientific research and human aid survival strategies.

In addition, Singh recently presented related work, including: “Complimentary nature of Water Well, Subsurface and Meteorological Parameters Associated with Wenchuan (M= 8.0) and Lushan (M= 7.0) Earthquakes,” coauthored by Chapman University Visiting scholar Ms. Qing Ye, at the EMSEV 2014 (http://emsev2014.cbk.waw.pl/), International Conference in Warsaw, Poland September 22-26; and a talk titled “Land, Ocean and Atmospheric coupling in Changing Environment – Monitoring Through Multi Satellite Sensors” at the 4th International Workshop on Diagnosis of Environmental Health by Remote Sensing (DEHRS), held September 28-30, in Fuzhou, China.
