Their latest trick is a Tech Support scam that puts\u00a0a big warning screen on your computer, claiming that if you do not\u00a0call the support number, your whole hard disk will be deleted\u00a0in\u00a05 minutes. <strong>DON&#8217;T FALL FOR IT!!!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There are many variations of this scam, some claim they are your Internet Service Provider.\u00a0Others may claim to be from Microsoft and need stating you need to call in for an urgent update or they sh<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/information-systems\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2016\/10\/deleted-warning-1.jpeg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-361\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-361 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/information-systems\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2016\/10\/deleted-warning-1.jpeg\" alt=\"Hard drive deletion warning\" width=\"338\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/information-systems\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2016\/10\/deleted-warning-1.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/information-systems\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/68\/2016\/10\/deleted-warning-1-300x158.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 338px) 100vw, 338px\" \/><\/a>ow you a blue screen that claims your computer needs to be repaired. There is always a number to call, and these scammers will try to charge\u00a0hundreds of dollars on your credit card.<\/p>\n<p>These scams kick off\u00a0when a user visits a compromised website (which can occur by clicking on a link in a phish email) . The web page displays a fake &#8216;hard drive delete timer&#8217; that warns the user that their hard drive will be deleted\u00a0within five minutes. A warning audio tone is also played in the background, which again warns the user that their system is infected.<\/p>\n<p>Don&#8217;t fall for it! If you see these error message, or something similar on your computer at Chapman, contact the Chapman Service Desk at\u00a0<span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><strong>servicedesk@chapman.edu<\/strong><\/span>\u00a0or <strong>(714) 997-6600<\/strong>.
