While they often improve performance and introduce new features, their vital role is patching vulnerabilities that cybercriminals could exploit.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">By regularly updating your apps and operating systems, you reduce your exposure to threats and ensure your technology runs securely and efficiently.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Why are updates important?\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Security: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Patches vulnerabilities and protects against cyber threats<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Performance: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Boosts speed, stability, and efficiency<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Features: <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Unlocks new tools and enhancements<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">However, you can only benefit from the security fixes if you install updates promptly! To make sure you\u2019re always covered, enable automatic updates whenever possible and regularly check for any pending ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Watch Out for Fake Update Scams<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Ever seen a pop-up claiming your system is outdated and urging you to install an update? Be cautious; these are often scams that trick you into downloading malware. If you see one, close your browser immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">To update safely, use your system\u2019s built-in tools:\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Windows<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: go to Settings \u2192 Windows Update \u2192 Check for updates<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">MacOS<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">: go to System Settings \u2192 General \u2192 Software Update.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span data-contrast=\"auto\">For other apps, only download updates from the official developer\u2019s website.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><i><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Note: Updates for Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Office applications are issued by the Department of Information Systems and Technology for Chapman University-issued Windows computers.
