Fowler School of Law\u2019s faculty made a strong showing this month at the Association of American Law School\u2019s (AALS) annual meeting in San Francisco. The meeting brought together thousands of law faculty, deans, other legal scholars, and administrators to discuss critical legal issues and further the organization\u2019s mission to uphold and advance legal education. This year\u2019s conference theme was \u201cWhy Law Matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Below is a summary of the Chapman Law faculty\u2019s participation at the 2017 AALS meeting:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Associate Dean for Academic Affairs <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/daniel-bogart\">Daniel Bogart<\/a> was a speaker on the panel \u201cKeeping the \u2018Real\u2019 in Real Estate Transactions: New Ideas, Best Practices, and Partnership Opportunities to Strengthen Teaching and Scholarship\u201d organized by the Real Estate Transactions Section.<\/li>\n<li>Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/donald-kochan\">Donald Kochan<\/a> moderated the \u201cProperty Law Works in Progress\u201d panel organized by the Property Law Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/bobby-dexter\">Bobby Dexter<\/a> was a participant in the discussion group \u201cThe Future of Tax Administration and Enforcement.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/david-dowling\">David Dowling<\/a> was a speaker on the panel \u201cUsing Technology to Unlock Engagement and Learning\u201d organized by the Teaching Methods Section and co-sponsored by the Technology, Law, and Legal Education Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/david-gibbs\">David Gibbs<\/a> was a participant in the discussion group \u201cIntroducing Leadership Development into the Law School Curriculum.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/ernesto-hernandez\">Ernesto Hern\u00e1ndez-Lopez<\/a> moderated the panel &#8220;Food Justice as Interracial Justice&#8221; organized by the Poverty Law Section and co-sponsored by the Law, Medicine and Health Care Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/julie-marzouk\">Julie Greenwald Marzouk<\/a> moderated the discussion group \u201cThe Central American Refugee Crisis: A Discussion of the Current Response and Evaluation of the U.S. Legal Obligations Under Domestic and International Law.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/lawrence-rosenthal\">Lawrence Rosenthal<\/a> was a speaker on the panel \u201cFalse Confessions in Context\u201d organized by the Criminal Justice Section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>At the meeting, the following Chapman Law faculty members received AALS section committee service appointments:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Dean <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/matthew-parlow\">Matthew Parlow<\/a> was elected to serve as the 2017\u00a0Chair of the State and Local Government Law Section.<\/li>\n<li>Associate Dean for Research and Faculty Development <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/donald-kochan\">Donald Kochan<\/a> was elected to serve as the 2017\u00a0Chair of the Property Law Section and as the\u00a02017\u00a0Treasurer of the Real Estate Transactions Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/lan-cao\">Lan Cao<\/a> was re-elected to serve on the Executive Committees of the Economic Globalization and Governance Section and the International Law Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/ernesto-hernandez\">Ernesto Hern\u00e1ndez-Lopez<\/a> was elected to serve on the Executive Committee of the Agricultural and Food Law Section.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/wendy-seiden\">Wendy Seiden<\/a> was selected to serve on the Planning Committee for the 2018 Conference on Clinical Legal Education.<\/li>\n<li>Professor <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/kenneth-stahl\">Kenneth Stahl<\/a> was elected to serve as Treasurer of the State and Local Government Law Section.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Chapman was also pleased to co-sponsor (with the Stetson University College of Law) the breakfast meeting of the AALS Section on Associate Deans for Academic Affairs and Research.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to our strong faculty presence at the 2017 AALS annual meeting, the law school\u2019s Director of Communications David Finley moderated or co-moderated three panels at the AALS Institutional Advancement Section\u2019s two-day annual meeting, also held in San Francisco this month.
