{"id":12490,"date":"2017-03-31T14:02:21","date_gmt":"2017-03-31T21:02:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/law\/2017\/03\/31\/bette-and-wylie-aitken-family-protection-clinic-students-lead-training-for-local-advocates\/"},"modified":"2017-03-31T14:02:21","modified_gmt":"2017-03-31T21:02:21","slug":"bette-and-wylie-aitken-family-protection-clinic-students-lead-training-for-local-advocates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2017\/03\/31\/bette-and-wylie-aitken-family-protection-clinic-students-lead-training-for-local-advocates\/","title":{"rendered":"Bette and Wylie Aitken Family Protection Clinic Students Lead Training for Local Advocates"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_12493\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12493\" style=\"width: 350px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/03\/image4.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12493\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/03\/image4.jpg\" alt=\"Professor Marzouk with students\" width=\"350\" height=\"467\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12493\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Professor Julie Marzouk, Mario Oropeza (JD &#8217;18), and Omaraid Guerrero (JD &#8217;17)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This month, Chapman University Fowler School of Law students in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/legal-clinics\/family-protection.aspx\">Bette and Wylie Aitken Family Protection Clinic<\/a>, along with Professor Julie Marzouk, conducted a legal training for more than 60 professionals to explain the means by which immigrant victims of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking can obtain lawful immigration status.<\/p>\n<p>The audience included court-appointed victim advocates, attorneys, paralegals, domestic violence shelter legal advocates, and Board of Immigration Appeals-accredited immigration representatives.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe immigration law training allows students in the Family Protection Clinic to magnify their impact,\u201d said Professor Marzouk, Assistant Clinical Professor of the Family Protection Clinic. \u201cThe legal and social service advocates who attended will use the information to screen for immigration relief and for client safety planning and evidence-gathering.\u00a0These trainings allow thousands of victims to be reached, as each service provider meets with hundreds of victims each year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Further, Professor Marzouk continued, &#8220;the relationships the clinic forges with legal and social service providers allows our clients to receive holistic domestic violence-related services and fosters effective legal referrals to the Family Protection Clinic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTrainings such as these are vital in our community because they reach individuals who are often the first point of contact for victims of domestic violence,\u201d said Omaraid Guerrero (JD \u201917), who is enrolled in the clinic and helped lead the training. \u201cBy empowering professionals with knowledge about immigration law, we take a step closer to addressing the problem of domestic abuse in immigrant populations which often goes unreported due to fear of deportation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/03\/image2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12496\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/03\/image2.jpg\" alt=\"training\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a>Mario Oropeza (JD \u201918), who also helped lead the training, commented that \u201cthe clinic provides a great opportunity for students to help survivors of domestic violence while also allowing students to gain experience in the complex world of immigration law.
