The presentation, \u201cThe Growing Threat to the Legitimacy of the U.S. Government,\u201d was attended by a full house of Fowler School of Law and Chapman University students, faculty, and administrators, as well as members of the law school\u2019s Board of Advisors and other special guests.<\/p>\n<p>Feingold\u2019s presentation opened with comments on the political climate following the 2016 election. \u201cWe can\u2019t just get distracted by Donald Trump, because these things preceded Donald Trump and they will follow after Donald Trump,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He went on to outline his theory about challenges to the \u201cfour pillars of democracy,\u201d which he asserted have been \u201cbrutally attacked\u201d since 2010. Feingold identified these pillars as the right to vote, which has been impacted by voter ID laws and restrictions; campaign finance laws, which currently contradict the fundamental idea of \u201cone person, one vote\u201d; how presidents are elected, and specifically the Electoral College; and the Supreme Court of the United States, which, he opined, was undermined recently when former President Obama was prevented from filling a vacancy on the Court.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/04\/feingold-dialogue-2.jpg\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-12558\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-12558\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/04\/feingold-dialogue-2.jpg\" alt=\"russell feingold and dean parlow\" width=\"300\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/04\/feingold-dialogue-2.jpg 399w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/04\/feingold-dialogue-2-200x300.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>The presentation was followed by a lively Q&amp;A session with Fowler School of Law Dean Matt Parlow and members of the audience. When asked how both sides of the political spectrum can move toward a common ground to create a helpful national dialogue, Feingold said the greatest power lies with voters. \u201cI really believe this comes from the people and what they want,\u201d Feingold said. \u201cThrough most of my political career what I\u2019ve found is that people really like it when you work with the other
