{"id":12687,"date":"2017-05-24T09:27:43","date_gmt":"2017-05-24T16:27:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/law\/2017\/05\/24\/fowler-alumna-amanda-thyden-jd-17-graduates-with-mediation-on-her-mind\/"},"modified":"2017-05-24T09:27:43","modified_gmt":"2017-05-24T16:27:43","slug":"fowler-alumna-amanda-thyden-jd-17-graduates-with-mediation-on-her-mind","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2017\/05\/24\/fowler-alumna-amanda-thyden-jd-17-graduates-with-mediation-on-her-mind\/","title":{"rendered":"Fowler Alumna Amanda Thyden (JD \u201917) Graduates with Mediation on Her Mind"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>For a student who entered law school with some doubts about her ability to excel, Amanda Thyden (JD \u201917) far exceeded her expectations.\u00a0 During her three years at Fowler School of Law, Thyden served as Editor-in-Chief of the<em> Chapman Law Review<\/em>, was a law school ambassador, participated in Chapman\u2019s Mediation Clinic, and was a member of several of the school\u2019s award-winning competition teams. \u00a0As part of the recently graduated class of 2017, Thyden was one of two graduates awarded the law school\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2017\/05\/19\/chapman-law-graduates-honored-at-annual-pre-commencement-jd-awards-banquet-and-ll-m-reception\/\">Distinguished Graduate Award<\/a><strong>. <\/strong>This award recognizes graduating students whose scholarship, ethics, and service exemplify the highest ideals of the legal profession.<\/p>\n<p>After starting law school, a friend convinced Thyden to attend an information session for Chapman\u2019s competition teams. Soon she became an active member of the law school\u2019s Appellate Moot Court and Alternative Dispute Resolution boards, earning excellent team finishes at domestic and international competitions. Thyden finished strong in her final competition in April, taking second place individually at the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2017\/04\/26\/chapman-law-competition-students-finish-in-top-three-at-international-mediation-tournament-in-glasgow-scotland\/\">International Mediation Competition<\/a> in Glasgow, Scotland.\u00a0 Thyden credits her work on the competition boards with much of her success in law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMoot Court helped me improve my oral advocacy and taught me how to choose my words as carefully as possible,\u201d she said. \u201cAs a competitor, I had three judges interpreting what I was saying through each judge\u2019s lens,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>With multiple competitions and countless mediations under her belt, she now feels ready to serve others with the skills she acquired.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI figured that by the time I left law school, I would be trained to be a practicing attorney, and now I know that\u2019s exactly the case,\u201d she noted.<\/p>\n<p>Thyden recently wrapped up an externship with Children\u2019s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC) where she assisted low-income families with guardianships and conservatorships, putting valuable lessons from the Mediation Clinic to use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAttorneys often work with families that are dealing with challenging and emotional circumstances, so you have to be able to discuss very sensitive information in an empathetic way,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Before law school, Thyden worked as a director of social services for a retirement home.
