After <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2016\/07\/18\/putting-your-summer-to-work-with-fowler-school-of-law-study-abroad\/\">studying abroad in Israel and interning with the Knesset (parliament) last summer<\/a>, she spent much of this summer in Vicenza, Italy as a JAG Corps legal intern for U.S. Army Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Mandi intended to join the military after completing her undergraduate education, but instead chose to attend law school at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/\">Chapman University Fowler School of Law<\/a>. When the possibility of a JAG Corps internship was offered via Chapman\u2019s On-Campus Interview program last year, she was naturally drawn to it.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBesides easy access to the best gelato and pizza in the world, the best part of the job was the variety of work I was assigned,\u201d she reflected. \u201cI learned so much in such a short time because of the nature of the JAG Corps\u2019 mission.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12860\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12860\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/08\/Mandi-JAG-softball.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-12860\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2017\/08\/Mandi-JAG-softball.jpg\" alt=\"Mandi Ford JAG\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12860\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Mandi was even invited to join the office&#8217;s softball team.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>While her expectations for the position were high, the reality of the work reaffirmed her goal to become a commissioned JAG Corps officer after graduating from Chapman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JAG personnel\u2014both enlisted and officers\u2014were so welcoming and kind,\u201d she said. \u201cI also didn\u2019t expect the JAG office to care so much about my learning experience. I was never told \u2018no\u2019 when I asked to attend a trial, preliminary hearing, or appointment. The office made a point of including me in everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mandi was familiar with much of the tasks she performed with the JAG Corps, having spent a semester working in Chapman University\u2019s Military and Veteran\u2019s Law Institute. Her skills were also bolstered by her Legal Research and Writing (LRW) coursework at the law school.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe JAG internship helped to develop my analytical skills even more,\u201d she said. \u201cLegal analysis was important to every assignment I was given, and because I was able to talk through legal theories with my supervisors, I was able to grow in my thinking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rising 3L Mandi Shaughnessy-Ford (JD \u201918) isn\u2019t opposed to a little adventure.
