{"id":13783,"date":"2021-04-21T17:10:13","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T00:10:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/law\/2021\/04\/21\/2021-rutan-tucker-golden-gavel-winners-announced\/"},"modified":"2021-04-21T17:10:13","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T00:10:13","slug":"2021-rutan-tucker-golden-gavel-winners-announced","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2021\/04\/21\/2021-rutan-tucker-golden-gavel-winners-announced\/","title":{"rendered":"2021 Rutan &amp; Tucker Golden Gavel winners announced"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/index.aspx\">Chapman University Fowler School of Law<\/a> students Piper Brockley (JD \u201923) and Kyla Nguyen (JD \u201923) made their final arguments in the annual Rutan &amp; Tucker Golden Gavel Competition, they did so in a very different setting than their predecessors\u2014due to the pandemic, this year\u2019s public exhibition round was being held virtually via Zoom.<\/p>\n<p>But that didn\u2019t diminish the strength of their arguments. Brockley (representing the defendant) and Nguyen (representing the plaintiff) demonstrated polished professionalism before a panel of guest judges: Judge Karen E. Scott, Central District of California; Associate Justice Lamar W. Baker, California Court of Appeal; and Meredith Williams, a partner at the competition\u2019s sponsoring firm, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rutan.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rutan &amp; Tucker, LLP<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_13788\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-13788\" style=\"width: 250px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-13788\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/71\/2021\/04\/gg-21-finalists.jpg\" alt=\"Kyla Nguyen and Piper Brockley\" width=\"250\" height=\"293\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-13788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kyla Nguyen and Piper Brockley, both JD class of 2023, were the 2021 Rutan &amp; Tucker Golden Gavel Competition winners.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the annual competition, the entire first-year class engaged in oral arguments based on briefs written all semester as part of their Legal Research and Writing class. After every student participated, 32 students qualified to advance to the quarterfinal rounds (16 plaintiff advocates and 16 defendant advocates) and eight students qualified to advance to the semi-final rounds: Ujala Batool, Tyler Makin, Kaidyn McClure and Kyla Nguyen for the plaintiff, and Piper Brockley, Hunter Leppard, Madeline Ong, and Zachary Princi for the defendant.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, after one semi-final round, the field was narrowed to four students\u2014Brockley, McClure, Nguyen and Princi. They were all outstanding, making the judges\u2019 jobs very difficult, but ultimately, Brockley and Nguyen were named the Golden Gavel winners, moving on to the final exhibition round on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Williams praised Brockley and Nguyen\u2019s performance during the exhibition, telling the finalists that they \u201cboth did a really great job standing your ground against questions, especially when we pushed you on the facts or the laws. You\u2019d come back and respectfully and clearly state your position.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Justice Baker had similar feedback for the future attorneys following their final rebuttals. \u201cYou\u2019re both very prepared,\u201d he told Brockley and Nguyen. \u201cThat\u2019s something you always want from lawyers appearing in court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Orange County-based Rutan &amp; Tucker has a long history of investment in the mission of Chapman University and the Fowler School of Law. Several Chapman alumni are employed by the firm, including partners Jennifer Farrell, Brandon Sylvia, and Kenneth Zielinski. Rutan &amp; Tucker\u2019s sponsorship of the Golden Gavel competition includes $500 scholarships for each of the finalists.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019d like to thank Rutan &amp; Tucker for continuing its partnership and sponsorship of the Rutan &amp;
