{"id":3661,"date":"2012-10-01T16:39:16","date_gmt":"2012-10-01T23:39:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/law\/2012\/10\/01\/chapman-law-alumna-helps-free-innocent-man\/"},"modified":"2012-10-01T16:39:16","modified_gmt":"2012-10-01T23:39:16","slug":"chapman-law-alumna-helps-free-innocent-man","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2012\/10\/01\/chapman-law-alumna-helps-free-innocent-man\/","title":{"rendered":"Chapman Law Alumna Helps Free John Edward Smith"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left\">Chapman 2012 Alumna Valerie Feltz Rone, as part of her work with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innocencematters.us\" target=\"_blank\">Innocence Matters<\/a>, helped free a man who served nearly nineteen years in prison for a crime he did not commit. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.innocencematters.us\/John_Smith.html\" target=\"_blank\">John Edward Smith<\/a> was 18 when he went to prison for a shooting that took place in a gang-infested area. Despite his strong alibi, he was convicted on largely perjured testimony, due to ineffective counsel. Innocence Matters has been trying to get Smith released since 2009.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Valerie began working on the case while <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/externships\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">externing<\/a> at Innocence Matters during her 2L year, after learning about the opportunity through <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/careers\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">Chapman Law Career Services<\/a>. She says working on the case &#8220;changed my life forever,&#8221; calling her experience with Innocence Matters &#8220;an invaluable educational opportunity.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left\">Valerie was one of the head externs, doing investigative work, working on the habeas corpus petition, and visiting Smith in prison.\u00a0 Innocence Matters founder Deirdre O&#8217;Connor referred to Valerie as an important part of the defense team and\u00a0 &#8220;a force to reckon with in court!&#8221;\u00a0 Valerie is currently living in Oregon and awaiting her bar results.<\/p>\n<p
