{"id":4019,"date":"2012-11-06T16:35:46","date_gmt":"2012-11-07T00:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/law\/2012\/11\/06\/chapman-alumnus-uses-clinic-experience-in-employment\/"},"modified":"2012-11-06T16:35:46","modified_gmt":"2012-11-07T00:35:46","slug":"chapman-alumnus-uses-clinic-experience-in-employment","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/law\/2012\/11\/06\/chapman-alumnus-uses-clinic-experience-in-employment\/","title":{"rendered":"Alumnus\u2019 Work in Legal Filmmakers Clinic Leads to Position in Global Entertainment Company"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Through the networks I developed and the skills I acquired from Professor Kathy Heller\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/law\/legal-clinics\/entertainment-contracts.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">filmmakers clinic<\/a>, I was able to step right into film and commercial producing while continuing to have the day-to-day interaction in business and legal affairs that I was trained for,\u201d says Chapman Law School alumnus Christian McGuigan.\u00a0 As the Manager of Social Action Film Campaigns for Participant Media, a Los Angeles-based global entertainment company specializing in socially-relevant media with films including <em>The Kite Runner, An Inconvenient Truth,<\/em> and <em> The Help<\/em><em><\/em>, McGuigan has the opportunity to work with individuals \u201cwho are all dedicated to the belief that a well told story can change the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McGuigan was first made aware of Participant Media through his externship in Business and Legal Affairs at MTV Networks, which Professor Heller helped orchestrate.\u00a0 McGuigan tracked Participant Media\u2019s progress as he worked as an independent film producer after graduation and seized the opportunity to work for Participant Media when the chance arose.\u00a0 <strong>According to McGuigan, \u201cWhen push comes to shove, having a legal background gives you a great leg up in anything you do in the entertainment industry.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Currently, Participant Media is distributing Ava Duvernay&#8217;s new film, <em>Middle of Nowhere<\/em>. Duvernay is a writer\/director whose first film was a legal project of students in the Entertainment Law Clinic at Chapman Law School.
