Westminster<\/em> decision that ultimately desegregated public schools in the state of California. This event,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> inspired<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by panelist Janice Munemitsu&#8217;s book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thekindnessofcolor.com\/\"><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Kindness of Color<\/span><\/em><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, tells the story of the Munemitsu family&#8217;s connection to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/educational-resources\/educational-activities\/background-mendez-v-westminster-re-enactment\"><em>Mendez v. Westminster School District of Orange County, et al.<\/em>, Archives to research the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">case&#8217;s role in desegregating Mexican-only public schools in Orange County, California, while considering the context of World War II and the Japanese American incarceration. Each panelist has worked on a project that amplifies their understanding of the case, including books, a documentary, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westminster-ca.gov\/our-city\/project-w\/projects\/mendez-historic-freedom-trail-and-monument\">Mendez Historic Freedom Trail<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><em><strong>If you missed the event, feel free to view the recording on our institutional repository <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.chapman.edu\/library_event_videos\/11\/\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/em><\/h3>\n<blockquote>\n<h3><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">About the Moderator and Panelist<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">s: <\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Annie Tang<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2022\/04\/05\/celebrating-chapmans-first-university-archivist-and-mellon-fellowship-recipient-annie-tang\/\">University Archivist<\/a> and Chair of Special Collections and Archives, organized and moderated the panel. From 2022 to 2024, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Annie <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was a fellow in the <a href=\"https:\/\/rarebookschool.org\/admissions-awards\/fellowships\/mellon-diversity\/\">Andrew W. Mellon Fellowship for Diversity, Inclusion &amp; Cultural Heritage<\/a>. An archivist at heart, she has worked for several repositories, including those <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">at the University of California, Los Angeles; the University of California, Santa Cruz; and <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Johns Hopkins University.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brendan Bubion<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is an Emmy\u00ae Award-winning video producer and educator. In 2022, he received an MFA in Documentary Filmmaking from Chapman&#8217;s Dodge College. \u00a0His thesis film, &#8220;Growing Up Behind Barbed Wire,&#8221; shares the experience of the Munemitsu Family during World War II. Currently, he is a Senior Video Producer at Caltech. Formerly, he was the lead producer of the award-winning &#8220;Weekly Arts&#8221; series for KCET\/PBS SoCal. As an educator, he has taught courses in filmmaking at Cal Arts and Champlain College.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jeff Hittenberger <\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">serves as a Professor of Education and the Dean of the School of Education at Vanguard University. He previously served as Chief Academic Officer at the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE) and Provost\/Vice President for Academic Affairs at Vanguard University. Dr. Hittenberger earned a<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Ph.D. from the University of Southern California. He has worked closely with the City of Westminster and OCDE on the Mendez Freedom Trail and Tribute Monument Park project, honoring the legacy of <em>Mendez v. Westminster<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Jessica Lander<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is an award-winning teacher, writer, and author.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> For much of the last decade, she has taught history and civics to recent immigrant students in a Massachusetts public high school. She <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">has won numerous awards for her teaching, including being named the 2023 Massachusetts History Teacher of the Year<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> and one of the 2023 Top Ten National History Teachers <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">of the Year presented by the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History; a 2023 MA Teacher of the Year Finalist, presented by the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education; and a Top 50 Finalist for the Global Teacher Prize in 2021, presented by the Varkey Foundation. Jessica writes frequently about education policy and teaching. She is the author of <em>Making Americans: Stories of Historic Struggles, New Ideas, and Inspiration in Immigrant Education<\/em>,<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> recently awarded the 2024 George Orwell <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Award, presented by the National Council of Teachers of English<\/span> <span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">to &#8220;writers who have made outstanding contributions to the critical analysis of public discourse<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">&#8220;; a coauthor of <em>Powerful Partnerships: A Teacher&#8217; <\/em><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><em>Guide to Engaging Families for Student Success<\/em>; and the author of <em>Driving Backwards<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Janice Munemitsu<\/span><\/strong><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> is a native of OC and a Japanese American Sansei. Her career included leading consumer brands at The Clorox Company, Mars, and ConAgra Foods, managing over 500 million dollars in business revenue. As a board member for several non-profits, Janice participates in the US-Japan Council. She has a BS\/MBA from USC and a Masters from Biola University. She is the author of <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Kindness of Color<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">, which tells the story of how her family, the Munemitsus, leased their farm to the Mendez family during the proceedings of <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Mendez v. Westminster<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> while being incarcerated in internment camps during World War II. Janice hopes <\/span><em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The Kindness of Color<\/span><\/em><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> will be a source of light and hope, inspiring us to cultivate kindness in our communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>* The Kindness of Color Panel event was co-sponsored by the <a href=\"https:\/\/rarebookschool.org\/admissions-awards\/fellowships\/mellon-diversity\/\">Andrew W. Westminster<\/em> Archives<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/000\/setting-the-precedent-mendez-et-al-v-westminster-school-district-of-orange-county-et-al-and-the-us-courthouse-and-post-office.htm\"><em>Mendez v. Westminster<\/em> case <\/a><\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">was filed<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> by the Mendezes of Westminster, the Estradas and Guzmans of Santa Ana, the Palominos of Garden Grove, and the Ramirezes of Orange, whose children <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">were forced<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> to attend schools reserved for Mexican American students. (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.santa-ana.org\/william-and-virginia-guzman\/\">Source: City of Santa Ana<\/a>) The families sued the Westminster School District, Garden Grove Elementary School District, Santa Ana City Schools, and El Modena School District. In <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">1946, Judge Paul McCormick ruled in favor of the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> families, finding that the <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zinnedproject.org\/news\/tdih\/mendez-v-westminster\/#:~:text=On%20March%2018%2C%201946%2C%20Judge,damaging%20to%20Mexican%20American%20students.\">social, psychological, and pedagogical costs<\/a> of segregated education were damaging to Mexican American students.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> Though the school districts later appealed, in 1947, <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld the<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> initial decision, finding that the school district&#8217;s actions violated California law. <\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The <em>Mendez v. Westminster<\/em> case has a significant <a href=\"https:\/\/digitalcommons.chapman.edu\/cgi\/viewcontent.cgi?article=1075&amp;context=vocesnovae\">legacy<\/a> in California due to its desegregating schools within the state.<\/span><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"> However, its legacy extends to the national level, where it <a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.ocde.us\/the-final-ruling-in-mendez-v-westminster-which-ended-sanctioned-school-segregation-came-75-years-ago-today\/\">influenced<\/a> the 1954 <em>Brown v. Board of Education<\/em> ruling that desegregated schools nationwide.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Learn More about <em>Mendez v.
