An initiative of The Getty, PST: LA\/LA<\/a> is a far-reaching and ambitious project in which over 70 Southern California institutions explore Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles. Chapman&#8217;s exhibition focuses on the work of prolific artist Emigdio Vasquez, known for his Orange County murals and easel paintings that depict the Chicano experience. The exhibition encompasses Vasquez&#8217;s 1979 mural,\u00a0<em>El Proletariado de\u00a0Aztl\u00e1n\u00a0<\/em>(located at 442 N Cypress St), as well as exhibitions in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/wilkinson\/art\/Gallery\/index.aspx\">Guggenheim Gallery<\/a> and Argyros Forum.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2601\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2601\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2017\/09\/IMG_0016.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2601 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2017\/09\/IMG_0016.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2601\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The exhibition on the second floor of Argyros Forum presents a historical look at Emigdio Vasquez and Chicana\/o identity.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Leatherby Libraries&#8217; <a href=\"http:\/\/www1.chapman.edu\/library\/archives\/\">Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections and Archives<\/a> generously loaned materials for the exhibit in Argyros Forum, located on the second floor in the Doy and Dee Henley Galleria.\u00a0These materials can be viewed in the fourth case in the Galleria, titled &#8220;El Barrio,&#8221; which explores local Chicana\/o history by focusing on citrus strikes, school segregation, and Orange County muralism. One of the items on loan is the graduate thesis of James Kent,<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a0who argued for school segregation by negatively stereotyping Mexican-American home life, work ethic, and culture. The thesis was used against him in the Mendez v. Westminster case of 1947, which successfully argued for the desegregation of four Southern California school districts. This ruling set the stage for <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Brown v. Board of Education (1954), which desegregated public schools across the United States.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2595\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2595\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2017\/09\/IMG_0009.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2595 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2017\/09\/IMG_0009.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2595\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Leatherby Libraries&#8217; Frank Mt. Pleasant Library of Special Collections &amp; Archives loaned documents and photos (in center) for the fourth case in the Argyros Forum exhibit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Other loaned items include various class portraits depicting students before and after desegregation, as well as a Westminster School District certificate commemorating Mendez v. Westminster.
