At the Leatherby Libraries, we have an interview series highlighting the work our amazing librarians accomplish each day. These interviews help inform the community about all the different areas of the library and all the services we have! Erin Rivero, our new Reference Librarian, was kind enough to answer some questions for us.<\/p>\n

1. What is your name and title?<\/b><\/p>\n

\n

I’m\u00a0Erin Rivero and I’m\u00a0a part-time\u00a0Reference Librarian.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

2. In what department of the Leatherby Libraries do you work?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I work in the Instructional Services division\u2014I\u2019m at the Reference Desk (here<\/a>!)\u00a0Sunday afternoons and most weekday\u00a0evenings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

3. How long have you been at Chapman University?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I started this role\u00a0in February 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

4. What is your job in a nutshell?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

At the Reference Desk,\u00a0I help the Chapman community learn how to find and use\u00a0all kinds of\u00a0resources.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

5. Have you held any jobs at other universities or libraries?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Yes–I’ve worked\u00a0in various library roles over the past fifteen years.\u00a0Once upon a time I held a super cool graduate student position right\u00a0here at\u00a0the\u00a0Leatherby Libraries! It’s great to be back.<\/p>\n

When I\u2019m not here at Chapman, I’m\u00a0at\u00a0USC Libraries as part of their Integrated Library Systems\u00a0team.<\/p>\n

In the past few years\u00a0I\u00a0managed\u00a0an\u00a0early childhood education library for the\u00a0LA County Office of Education, and last year\u00a0I had the opportunity\u00a0to\u00a0launch a digital library for\u00a0the LA Philharmonic.\u00a0I’ve also\u00a0worked in municipal archives and\u00a0Orange County Public Libraries over the years, including\u00a0adult literacy instruction\u00a0at a prison library\u00a0in Irvine.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

6. What are your passions\/interests outside of work?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

I love traveling\u00a0and\u00a0spending time outdoors–mountains, parks, the beach, the road. Lately\u00a0I’m learning\u00a0how to drive<\/a>\u00a0my limited edition\u00a0Ural\u00a0sidecar\u00a0motorcycle!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

7. Where did you get your degree?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

My library degree is from USC (\u201817), and I\u00a0am a proud Chapman alumna (\u201807, \u201810, and\u00a0\u201812 in\u00a0music education, teaching,\u00a0and international studies).<\/p>\n

Related fact: Chapman\u00a0is where I met my college sweetheart, Augusto (\u201806,\u00a0\u201812), over in Argyros Forum almost fifteen years ago. I had my nose in a poetry anthology for a freshman English class, and he introduced himself. We\u2019ve been together since.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

8. Where is your hometown?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

Irvine, CA, which is\u00a0where I first tried\u00a0avocados<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

9. What is the last book you read, or the last book you loved?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

The last children’s\u00a0book I\u00a0loved\u00a0is\u00a0a tie between\u00a0this one<\/a>,<\/span> about a Paris zoo orangutan\u00a0who packs her bags\u00a0for Borneo, and this one<\/a>, about an aging duck learning to embrace death (literally, a calavera named “Death” in a checkered dress).<\/p>\n

In the grown-up books\u00a0genre, I just finished listening to Margaret Atwood’s special edition of\u00a0The Handmaid’s Tale<\/i>\u00a0on Audible–chilling, as it’s entirely inspired by not-fake-news history.\u00a0I\u2019m also\u00a0in the middle of\u00a0Uncommon Type: Short Stories<\/i>\u00a0by Tom Hanks, with whom\u00a0I share an admiration for typewriters.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

10. Any fun facts about yourself?<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

As\u00a0an amusing thing to do\u00a0on my\u00a0birthday a few years back, I auditioned to be\u00a0a Scare\u00a0Actor for NBCUniversal’s Halloween Horror Nights. Everything got real when\u00a0I\u00a0was\u00a0cast as a zombie\u00a0in\u00a0The Walking Dead<\/i>\u00a0seasonal maze–one of the most fun experiences of my life.<\/p>\n

Other fun\u00a0facts:\u00a0I have\u00a0flown\u00a0a small plane, scaled a four thousand foot rock pile,\u00a0and baked a\u00a0quiche.<\/p>\n
