{"id":3742,"date":"2018-09-07T16:43:30","date_gmt":"2018-09-07T16:43:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/library\/2018\/09\/07\/the-world-remembers\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:34:42","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:34:42","slug":"the-world-remembers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2018\/09\/07\/the-world-remembers\/","title":{"rendered":"The World Remembers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Designed not only to honor the brave but to memorialize the fallen, the <strong>Center for American War Letters Archives<\/strong> preserves the narratives of families, loved ones, and heroes.\u00a0 This year, the <strong>Archives<\/strong> has the honor of commemorating one of the most heroic, and also most tragic, events in world history.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit is called <strong><em>The World Remembers: Honoring Victory and Loss at the End of the First World War<\/em><\/strong>.\u00a0 Located in the basement of the Leatherby Libraries, the <strong>Archives<\/strong> reading room has been transformed to display correspondence agonizing over the conflict, shouting in triumph, and ultimately thanking God for world peace.\u00a0 Also included are tangible wartime materials such as helmets, a saber, a mortar shell, and other fascinating materials brought home by brave servicemen who fought overseas.\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2018\/09\/IMG_3404.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3744 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2018\/09\/IMG_3404.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>The World Remembers<\/h3>\n<p>Highlighted in the exhibit is an international digital display called &#8220;The World Remembers.&#8221;\u00a0 The display, which Chapman University is the only institution in California to run out of hundreds around the world, lists the names of over one million military personnel from sixteen nations who lost their lives between 1918-1922. The display runs for sixty-one days, showing 16,455 names each day, and culminates on Armistice Day, November 11 .
