{"id":4422,"date":"2019-05-30T15:02:27","date_gmt":"2019-05-30T15:02:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/library\/2019\/05\/30\/a-poem-about-saying-nothing\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:34:46","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:34:46","slug":"a-poem-about-saying-nothing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2019\/05\/30\/a-poem-about-saying-nothing\/","title":{"rendered":"A Poem About Saying Nothing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/05\/IMG_3766.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4425 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/05\/IMG_3766.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"181\" height=\"243\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>During the Second World War, correspondence with loved ones back home was highly encouraged to boost morale and remind the home front of the people for whom they were working so hard. At the same time, however, military censorship evolved beyond the previous great war due to new intelligence gathering methods by the enemy. Anything could be deemed a military secret, including the location of a particular soldier. If American soldiers mail were to be captured, the enemy could gain a tactical advantage. The Center for American War Letters Archives is filled with letters from soldiers attempting to toe that line, telling their stories to their loved ones without divulging information. Sometimes, it felt like there was nothing they could say.<\/p>\n<p>From time to time, this annoyance was addressed by soldiers in their letters home. From telling their wife that they cannot give specifics, or explaining to mom that there just is not much more to say. In a recent find in the Archives, Private First Class Roger L. Carroll of the United States Army got a little more creative when he sent home a poem addressing the issue from the Battle of Bougainville in the South Pacific. Here are his words from June 1943:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">I pick up my pen only to find,<br \/>\nI haven\u2019t much to say so I hope you won\u2019t mind,<br \/>\nI\u2019ll start with a Poem, which I hope you can read,<br \/>\nFor a table to write on is one thing I need.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Can\u2019t write very much, the censor\u2019s to blame.<br \/>\nJust saying I\u2019m well and signing my name.<br \/>\nCan\u2019t tell when I came here, can\u2019t tell where I\u2019m at,<br \/>\nCan\u2019t tell when I\u2019ll leave here for no one knows that.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Can\u2019t tell what we are doing, can\u2019t describe the place,<br \/>\nJust saying I\u2019m healthy and still in the race.<br \/>\nCan\u2019t mention the weather or whether there is rain,<br \/>\nAll military secrets must secrets remain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">We work in the day time and stand guard at night,<br \/>\nWe live in tents and have candles for light.<br \/>\nWe exist on corned beef with beans for dessert,<br \/>\nNo table to sit at so we sit in the dirt.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">There are better places and some not so good,<br \/>\nBut we are not complaining, no reason we should.<br \/>\nWe jump in our cots at the end of the day,<br \/>\nAnd dream of our loved ones in the USA.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Some days I\u2019m happy and some I\u2019m blue,<br \/>\nBut the day doesn\u2019t pass that I don\u2019t think of you.<br \/>\nAll fooling aside it\u2019s not so bad.<br \/>\nWe joke and we laugh and refuse to be sad.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">Don\u2019t take me too seriously, not having a bad time,<br \/>\nThis isn\u2019t much of a Poem but the sentences rhyme.<br \/>\nThis is enough nonsense for one person to write<br \/>\nSo I\u2019ll call this a letter and close with Good Night.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">PFC Roger L. Carroll<br \/>\nSomewhere in the Pacific<br \/>\nJune 1943<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/05\/IMG_3765.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4423 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/05\/IMG_3765.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"267\" height=\"356\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>A poem like this is a great find for the study of censorship and the experience of soldiers overseas who wanted to reach out, wanted to tell someone about what they have seen and what they are going through. The rest of the letters, all of those that are censored, also provide an insight into the soldiers&#8217; experiences.
