{"id":4745,"date":"2019-10-03T21:55:24","date_gmt":"2019-10-03T21:55:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/library\/2019\/10\/03\/california-in-world-war-i\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:34:50","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:34:50","slug":"california-in-world-war-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2019\/10\/03\/california-in-world-war-i\/","title":{"rendered":"California in World War I"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Earlier this year, the Cal Poly Pomona <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpp.edu\/~class\/ethics-and-policy-center\/index.shtml\">California Center for Ethics and Policy<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cpp.edu\/~veterans\/\">Veterans Resource Center<\/a> received a grant from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neh.gov\/\">National Endowment for the Humanities<\/a> to lead a series of dialogues about the California experience of war. One contingency of the grant was that some of the dialogues take place off of the Cal Poly Pomona campus, and what better place to host a dialogue like this than our very own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/library\/libraries-collections-and-archives\/cawl-archives.aspx\">Center for American War Letters Archives<\/a>?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4746\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4746\" style=\"width: 580px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/10\/IMG_2770.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4746\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2019\/10\/IMG_2770.jpg\" alt=\"A small group of people sit facing away from the camera, while two men stand to either side of a projection screen in front of them.\" width=\"580\" height=\"326\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4746\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">CAWLA Archivist Andy Harman welcomes visitors to the Archives.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Last week, on September 24th, visitors from Cal Poly Pomona joined interested members of the Chapman University community to discuss selected chapters from historian Diane M.T. North&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/theccwh.org\/diane-m-t-north-california-at-war\/\"><em>California at War: The State and the People during World War I<\/em><\/a>. Surrounded by war letters and other materials from the archives, participants engaged in a conversation about the unique experience of Californians during World War I.
