From <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/collections\/2019\/03\/07\/the-border-an-interdisciplinary-examination\/\">art exhibits<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2019\/10\/30\/la-frontera-the-border\/\">book displays<\/a> to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2019\/11\/07\/please-join-us-for-the-conference-of-la-frontera-the-border-an-interdisciplinary-examination\/\">upcoming conference,<\/a>that will be held on campus November 14-16, 2019, the Leatherby Libraries has enjoyed taking part in this campus-wide conversation about borders, particularly the U.S.-Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p>As a part of this initiative, the library hosted a <a href=\"https:\/\/events.chapman.edu\/74491\">book club discussion<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Line-Becomes-River-Dispatches-Border\/dp\/0735217734\/ref=sr_1_1?crid=1B23HUMPHXQ7U&amp;keywords=the+line+becomes+a+river+book&amp;qid=1573510463&amp;sprefix=the+lin%2Caps%2C188&amp;sr=8-1\">The Line Becomes a River: Dispatches from the Border<\/a>. The author of the book, <a href=\"https:\/\/events.chapman.edu\/67620\">Francisco Cant\u00fa<\/a>, a former border patrol agent, will be giving the keynote address for the\u00a0<em>La Frontera &#8211; The Border<\/em> conference this Thursday, November 14th.<\/p>\n<p>The book club discussion was led by Delp Wilkinson Professor of Peace Studies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chapman.edu\/our-faculty\/lisa-leitz\">Lisa Leitz<\/a> and Leatherby Libraries Development Librarian <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2019\/08\/14\/librarian-interviews-essraa-nawar\/\">Essraa Nawar<\/a>. Participants included students, faculty, and staff, and the entire hour and a half was filled with lively discussion. Among other things, participants discussed the use of English and Spanish in the book, the book&#8217;s portrayal of\u00a0<em>machismo<\/em> among the border patrol agents, and the sometimes heartbreakingly-human way Cant\u00fa portrays the immigrants he encountered in the course of his job.
