{"id":9527,"date":"2024-03-26T21:09:12","date_gmt":"2024-03-26T21:09:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogschapman.wpenginepowered.com\/library\/2024\/03\/26\/celebrating-intellectual-property-rights-across-disciplines\/"},"modified":"2026-07-17T23:35:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-17T23:35:06","slug":"celebrating-intellectual-property-rights-across-disciplines","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/2024\/03\/26\/celebrating-intellectual-property-rights-across-disciplines\/","title":{"rendered":"Celebrating Intellectual Property Rights Across Disciplines"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>April is a busy month for Intellectual Property Rights awareness, with two global celebrations occurring annually \u2013 <a href=\"https:\/\/nationaltoday.com\/world-book-and-copyright-day\/\">World Book and Copyright Day<\/a>, which is celebrated on April 23<sup>rd<\/sup>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wipo.int\/web\/ipday\/2024-sdgs\/index\">World Intellectual Property Day<\/a>, which is celebrated on April 26<sup>th<\/sup>. World Book and Copyright Day was founded in 1995 by UNESCO, and its date, <strong>April 23<sup>rd<\/sup><\/strong>, was chosen because it is the anniversary of William Shakespeare\u2019s death. \u00a0This day honors authors and their creative works. It also encourages appreciation of the copyright systems that exist to protect writers and readers, with an underlying goal of incentivizing ongoing creative contribution to society and culture.<\/p>\n<p>Annually, just days later, World Intellectual Property Day is celebrated on <strong>April 26<sup>th<\/sup><\/strong> (which is, coincidentally, also the anniversary of the date of William Shakespeare\u2019s baptism). The World Intellectual Property Organization created this holiday. Each year has a theme that focuses on the interplay between intellectual property and daily life. The theme for 2024 is Intellectual Property and the United Nations\u2019 17 Sustainable Development Goals. Past themes include Women and Intellectual Property and Intellectual Property and Youth.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to serving as testaments to the enduring power of the creative arts, both celebrations are continuously engaged in balancing and reconciling both creator and consumer intellectual property rights and interests.<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2024\/03\/Navigating-Intellectual-Rights-Across-Disciplines-Exhibition-Logo.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-9632\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-9632 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2024\/03\/Navigating-Intellectual-Rights-Across-Disciplines-Exhibition-Logo.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"342\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2024\/03\/Navigating-Intellectual-Rights-Across-Disciplines-Exhibition-Logo.png 500w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2024\/03\/Navigating-Intellectual-Rights-Across-Disciplines-Exhibition-Logo-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2024\/03\/Navigating-Intellectual-Rights-Across-Disciplines-Exhibition-Logo-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 342px) 100vw, 342px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>With these upcoming celebrations, the Leatherby Libraries is excited to unveil a brand-new annual exhibit:\u00a0<strong>Celebrating Intellectual Property Rights Across Disciplines<\/strong>. Our exhibit will highlight the tension between protecting creators&#8217; intellectual property rights and allowing society the freedom to use (and benefit from) such creations across a variety of disciplines \u2014 from literature to music, the visual and performing arts, digital innovations, the health sciences to the mathematics, and much more. Each year, we will reflect on the intricacies of intellectual property rights for different disciplines and the challenges and triumphs of creators in those fields.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.chapman.edu\/library\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2023\/04\/roth.jpg\" alt=\"Librarian Katherine Roth\" width=\"148\" height=\"225\" \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Copyright\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/libguides.chapman.edu\/prf.php?id=6914a554-bddb-11ed-8db8-127d3674933b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Librarian Katherine Roth&#8217;s<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0appreciation for Intellectual Property Rights awareness catalyzed this celebration.
