Animal advocate and author Marti Kheel to speak at conference.

“Seeing Animals, Seeing Ourselves” is the theme of this year’s annual Animals and Religion Conference sponsored by the Interreligious Voices for Animal Compassion from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday, April 16, in the university’s Fish Interfaith Center.

This year’s conference focuses on how humans perceive and are perceived by the animals around us. How do religious and spiritual traditions help us to recognize the thoughts and even the feelings of a species other than human? How does the recognition of other animals enrich and disturb religious and spiritual traditions?

Speakers include Lorri Houston, a pioneer of the farmed animal sanctuary movement; Joseph J. Lynch, Ph.D., associate professor of philosophy at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo; animal advocate and author Marti Kheel; and veterinarian and vegan advocate Dr. Armaiti May.

Conference is $50 for the public and $20 for students.  Also scheduled is a post-conference vegan Mediterranean dinner with keynote speaker Paul Berry, former CEO of Best Friends Animal Society, $25.  Register online at
