Two teams of public relations students from the Dodge College of Film and Media Arts won national honors for their campaigns to encourage student participation in the 2010 Census.

Both teams earned honorable mentions for their entries in the Bateman Case Study Competition, the most prestigious competition for public relations students across the country. A total of 68 colleges and universities submitted entries. Of these submissions, 16 received honorable mentions and three were selected as finalists. Chapman was the only school to have two teams capture honorable mentions.

This year, the Bateman focused on the U.S. Census Bureau. Teams were challenged to educate students on campus and the local community about the purpose of the Census and importance of filling out the Census form.

Among the highlights of their campaigns were concerts, story times and information booths at Chapman, local community colleges and a major Census festival in Long Beach.

One Dodge team included Travis Culver, Maria Delano, Alyssa Mihm, Philia Pak and Amanda Vo.

The other team included Stephanie Baum, Candice DeForest, Janelle Maluenda, Jessica Pauletto and Courtney Shepard.

Both teams will present their award-winning campaigns at the Chapman PRSSA meeting at 7 p.m., Tuesday, May 4, at Dodge.

Joan Gladstone, assistant professor of public relations and advertising, Dodge College, served as the teams’ faculty advisor.
