Dr. Olivier

Speaking at the next Faculty Forum at noon Tuesday, March 8, will be Véronique Olivier, Ph.D., assistant professor of French, Wilkinson College, on the topic of “Simone de Beauvoir, Food and Existentialism,” Véronique Olivier, Ph.D., assistant professor of French, Wilkinson College.

The topic of food and cooking does not hold a privileged place in the works of French women writers. A feminist act?  Surprisingly, the most famous French feminist intellectual Simone de Beauvoir inundates her memoirs and novels with fares, dishes, and meals.  Professor Olivier proposes to explore De Beauvoir’s relationship to food and how this intimate connection directly explains her existentialist philosophy developed in her seminal essay
The Second Sex.

Faculty Forum series is Chapman’s traditional staff/faculty lecture series that pairs stimulating talks with all-you-can-eat Sodexo luncheon buffets. Faculty Forums are held in Beckman Hall 404. Lunch is $5.
