Around the globe and home again, Semester at Sea students dock in San Diego this week

Make way for priceless memories, a flock of Tweets and countless stories when the 25 Chapman University students who sailed with Semester at Sea this spring semester disembark on Wednesday, May 2, in San Diego — the final port-of-call on their 105-day cruise.

Since they’re nearly home, they were eager to send along a few photos. Check out the slide show above and visit the Semester at Sea blog to read about some of the adventures.

This year’s Chapman crew is just the latest in a long line of students who’ve participated in the ship-board study-abroad program. Originally known as University of the Seven Seas and later as World Campus Afloat, Semester at Sea exists on a broad scale largely due to Chapman. In 1965, Chapman was the first academic sponsor of the program and remained so for a decade.

Today, students still speak of life-changing adventures as they spend a semester studying and cruising around the world, stopping at venues ranging from Cape Town, South Africa, to Singapore.

“Semester at Sea began at Chapman University – we’re the birthplace,” says James J. Coyle, Ph.D., director of global education. “Especially during the 1960s and 1970s, Chapman College was known globally for that program, whose goal remains to expose students to multiple cultures as they travel around the world. It’s still one of our most popular programs.”
