Actress and playwright
Anna Deavere Smith
(
Nurse Jackie
and
The West Wing
) is said to have created a new form of theater that is part journalism, part social activism. Catch a glimpse of that work and join a discussion about its influence at the next “TED Talks on Tuesdays” gathering, Sept. 24, beginning at 11:45 a.m. in Argyros Forum 209C.

In Smith’s TED talk,
Four American Characters
, she explains and performs her art, inspired by Walt Whitman’s idea to “absorb America.” Jocelyn L. Buckner, Ph.D., assistant professor in the Department of Theatre, will lead a post-viewing discussion. Bring your lunch and join the conversation.

The lunchtime “TED Talks on Tuesdays” are sponsored by
TEDxChapmanU
and a variety of departments and colleges on campus. On Oct. 8, the event will be co-hosted by the Schmid College of Science and Technology.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. For more information, visit the
