“We’re very pleased about the recognition, but the biggest honor is hearing from viewers and knowing that the information we share on the show has helped them with their own medical issues,” said Larry Santora, M.D., an interventional cardiologist, who hosts each episode.

The series airs Saturdays at 6 p.m. on PBS SoCal Plus and explores issues of health and wellness with a variety of guests, including doctors, authors, patients and researchers.

The medical director of the Orange County Heart Institute and Research Center in Orange, Santora launched the series in 2008 to “use plain talk and clear explanations to help people understand otherwise complicated medical information,” he says. “We all are inundated with sensational claims about what we should do to be healthy. In conversations and demonstrations with the guests on the show, we cut through the hype and explain what really works, what doesn’t and why.”

Among the topics covered in episodes airing in May and June are the latest innovations in cosmetic dentistry with more realistic but less painful tooth replacements; a new instrument that makes chiropractic treatments more precise; an unflinching conversation about understanding and treating female sexual dysfunction; which low-testosterone treatments really work in response to the wave of “low-T” advertising campaigns; and an exploration of medical myths, including saunas and losing weight, glucosamine and chondroitin for joint pain, sodium content in medications and the trendy Paleo diet.

“Health Matters with Dr. Larry Santora” is produced by Chapman University’s Panther Productions and sponsored primarily by St. Joseph Health with additional funding from Weaver Health Solutions. To watch past episodes, visit www.drsantora.com.
