Grammy-winning alumnus returns to lead Chapman’s summer choral camp

It’s not every music camp that offers young students an opportunity to study with a Grammy award winner.

But then Chapman University’s Choral Music Camp for High School Singers is not just the typical summer music camp. Now in its sixth year, the camp is directed by Keith Hancock ’02 (M.A. ’04) the 2017 Grammy Music Educator of the Year.

Highlights of the Monday through Friday June 19-23 camp include:

  • College-level singing of major choral repertoire
  • Daily voice classes with Conservatory faculty and alumni
  • Elective classes with peers
  • Small ensemble rehearsals
  • Final performance in the new 1,044-seat Musco Center for the Arts.

Faculty and students from the Hall-Musco Conservatory of Music will assist Hancock, making for a low student-to-faculty ratio. This year the camp will also offer an overnight residency option. Check-in for the residency program begins Sunday, June 18.

In addition to teaching at Chapman, Hancock is the choral music director at Tesoro High School.  His other honors include being named the Secondary Vocal Music Teacher of the Year by the Orange County Department of Education in 2012. He also is the music director at Compass Bible Church in Aliso Viejo.

The campus receives support from the Lloyd E. and Elisabeth H. Klein Family Foundation and Christine and Lon Cross. Tuition information and scholarship availability is posted on the Choral Music Camp website.
